Perfect credentials, one might imagine, for a role that comes with already delicate political challenges. And then the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Update: Abby Martin’s Lawsuit Over Israel Loyalty Oath Mandate In US

New developments in Abby Martin’s major lawsuit challenging unconstitutional pro-Israel, anti-BDS law in the state of Georgia. | Abby Martin: “In February of this year, I was supposed to give a keynote speech at Georgia Southern University. Before the event, I refused to sign a state-mandated pledge to not boycott Israel in order to speak. My invitation was rescinded and the conference canceled as a result. I decided to sue the state of Georgia because signing an anti-BDS clause in order to work in the state is a direct violation of my rights to Constitutional free speech and to participate in political boycotts.

Combined with similar rates of late adverse effects for patients allocated to the 26 Gy schedule, why not be guided by the data?

_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-11-14
Saving nature without sacrificing modern life is the preeminent challenge of our time. It is a complicated problem that must be attacked simultaneously from multiple angles. Failure to act on one angle will invalidate efforts on other angles. | This problem must be addressed in two distinct phases. First, we must stop living in a manner that actively harms both ourselves and the natural world. Then we must learn how to create a world where both nature and humanity thrive. This two-part article will explore how we can reorganize our civilization to be compatible with such a vision.

[Correspondence] Lessons from The Lancet Low Back Pain Series media strategy
Mary O’Keeffe, Chris G Maher, Tomas Rozbroj, Mark Schoene, Rachelle Buchbinder | thelancet.com | 2020-11-14
Mass media campaigns improve population health by promoting positive health behaviours and discouraging negative ones.1 Campaigns have helped to successfully reduce smoking and promote physical exercise. For some health conditions, campaigns sometimes have to compete with the marketing of unproven tests and treatments by industry and professional associations. An example of success in this context was an Australian campaign that improved population and general practitioner beliefs about back pain, improved medical management, and reduced workers’ compensation costs for back pain.

Racism In Britain Has A Long If Contested History
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-11-14
The demobilized troopship HMT Empire Windrush that arrived at Tilbury Dock on 22 June 1948 was not Britain’s first migration ship, but its passengers were the first to be promised British citizenship, which the British Nationality Act of 1948 conferred on “every person born within the United Kingdom and Colonies.” Of the 1029 passengers, 802 from the Caribbean, 96 were household domestics and 85 were mechanics; there were also, in smaller numbers, scholars, civil servants and a judge. They had accepted an invitation to help rebuild the Mother Country and arrived full of hope for a warm reception.

The practice-changing results of the FAST-Forward trial1 show the importance of not settling for a good option when a better one is possible. Building on previous work establishing hypofractionated radiation therapy with a duration of 3 weeks, compared with the traditional 7-week radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancer,2 Adrian Brunt and colleagues1 have shown the non-inferiority of 1 week versus 3 weeks of hypofractionated radiotherapy in this patient population at 5 years after treatment.

[Perspectives] Analysing how sex and gender interact
Marcia L Stefanick, Londa Schiebinger | thelancet.com | 2020-11-14
In recent years prominent UK and US leaders in science and medicine have called for the end of all-male speaking panels, or “manels”, and focused admirably on the issue of participation in science. Arguably more important than who does the research, however, is how the research is conducted. Are crucial variables missing? Are basic theoretical frameworks ignoring key components? We posit that it’s time to end science in which mankind represents all humankind. It’s also time to integrate how sex and gender interact into basic and applied research.

It is possible to characterize positions of hierarchy within some Indigenous systems as hierarchies based on respect, not domination. People may hold a position as ‘chief’ in a hierarchy that encourages people to follow their guidance, but there is no mechanism to enforce obedience or observance of these leaders’ ideas. | Caribs/Kalinago would never abide an order to go fishing, but at the suggestion that fish was needed by the chief, people would join him in fishing. In Florida, tens of thousands of newly eligible voters who were previously disenfranchised due to their criminal records turned out to the polls for the 2020 election. Amendment 4, a measure that in 2018 overturned a Jim Crow-era law aimed at keeping African Americans from voting, restored voting rights to people with nonviolent felonies who have completed their sentences and was hailed as the biggest win for voting rights in decades. However, hundreds of thousands of people in Florida remain disenfranchised due to a modern-day poll tax that requires formerly incarcerated voters to pay all fees and fines to court…

The US and its allies are trying to turn the UN’s chemical arms watchdog into a political tool, but it remains an important platform via which Moscow can defend its interests, Alexander Shulgin, Russian envoy to the body, told RT. | The ambassador was speaking in the light of a statement made by Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, on Thursday. Nebenzia had suggested that the country may well consider quitting the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) altogether, if “it completely loses credibility.” | The statement was made amid a row between Moscow and the Wes…

How COVID-19 is Setting Working Women Back
aclu.org | 2020-11-13
In early October, the United States Labor Department reported that women were leaving the workforce at four times the rate of men. A few months earlier, a report from McKinsey Global revealed that while women made up 43 percent of the workforce, they had borne 56 percent of COVID-related job losses. This data — and much more — led one news source to call this moment “America’s First Female Recession.”, , This week, Colleen Ammerman joined At Liberty to discuss why this is happening, and what we can do about it. Ammerman is the director of Harvard Business School’s Gender Initiative. She is also the…

Black Cops Don’t Make Policing Any Less Anti-Black
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-11-13
Amid recent growing calls for defunding police this summer, a set of billboards appeared in Dallas, Atlanta, and New York City. Each had the words “No Police, No Peace” printed in large, bold letters next to an image of a Black police officer. Funded by a conservative right-wing think tank , the billboards captured all the hallmarks of modern pro-policing propaganda. The jarring choice of language, a deliberate corruption of the protest chant “no justice, no peace,” follows a pattern we see frequently from proponents of the police state.

A former Treasury aide marched out of Downing Street by armed police after being sacked by Dominic Cummings has settled her claim for unfair dismissal with the government. Sonia Khan, who was a special adviser to then-chancellor Sajid Javid, was dismissed last August over the alleged leaking of Brexit secrets. | The decision of the government to settle with her is likely to be seen as further evidence of Boris Johnson’s desire for a “reset” following the news that Cummings is to leave. It will also avoid potentially damaging evidence of the way Cummings ran the No 10 operation coming out in public hearings due to…

In Promoting New Nuclear Power, Biden-Harris Back Fiction Over Science

Chen Yun’s pigs stopped eating, then developed a fever. Within a week, all 10,000 on his farm in Jiangxi, in southeast China, had died of African swine fever (ASF). In 2018-19 the virus affected every province and led to the slaughter of half the country’s pigs. The outbreak spread from China to Southeast Asia; the virus, already present in central Europe, reached Belgium in 2018. France and other European nations remain braced for its possible arrival. ASF, which was identified over a century ago, does not infect humans but mortality can be up to 100% among pigs.
