More evidence emerges of T Cell Immunity against novel Coronavirus in unexposed people
Sandipan Talukdar | peoplesdispatch.org | 2020-08-09
Aside from our immune response to COVID-19, another important factor in countering the disease are cellular reactions which offer immunity in case of an infection. Two important aspects have emerged in recent case studies. The first is the production of an antibody that kills the virus at different locations of the body that the virus has colonized. The other is the cellular immunity provided by T cells. The T cell immunity could be more important than antibody production as it produces a longer immunogenic response than antibodies — which can die off in a shorter period of time, even within a few weeks.

How The US Failed At Its Foreign Policy Toward Venezuela
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-09
On August 4, 2020, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing on Venezuela. Appearing before the committee was U.S. State Department Special Representative Elliott Abrams. Abrams, who has had a long–and controversial–career in the formation of U.S. foreign policy, was assaulted by almost all the members of the Senate committee. The senators, almost without exception, suggested that Abrams had been–since 2019–responsible for a failed U.S. attempt to overthrow the Venezuelan government of President Nicolás Maduro.

What remained of the socialist movement was rapidly decelerating and fissuring after the big 1960’s radicalization had run its course. | Even in these inopportune conditions I managed to climb aboard and find my places in both the labor and socialist movements.

There Is No Political Solution To The Syrian Conflict
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-09
US Secretary of State, John Kerry, of the Obama administration, created a mantra for the media: “There is no military solution to Syria.” He said it so many times, he seemed to convince everyone. However, after 9 years of conflict it appears there is neither a military, nor political solution for Syria. Despite the fact that the Syrian government under President Assad, with help from Russia, has regained 70% of the territory, and all the major cities are calm, still there is no possibility for recovery or reconstruction of hospitals, schools, homes and lives due to the US sanctions.

Study: Return To Work Not Affected By $600 Unemployment Boost
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-09
There’s no relationship between expanded Unemployment Compensation payments and individuals’ likelihood of returning to work, according to two recent studies. One, by researchers at Yale University, finds that more generous UC payments are not related to lower rates of return to work. Another shows employers saw no overall decline in the number of applicants per job vacancy as a result of the increased payments. | The findings refute the assertion by some pundits and politicians from both parties who claim the additional $600 weekly payment to laid-off workers established by Congress in March is a “disincentive t…

Trump’s Order To Bypass Congress On COVID-19 Relief Faces Likely Legal Challenges
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-09
Washington, DC – President Trump on Saturday said he was bypassing Congress and taking unilateral action to provide financial relief to Americans struggling during the coronavirus crisis, despite uncertainty about his legal authority to do so. | Following the breakdown of talks on Capitol Hill to reach a bipartisan deal, Trump signed four orders that he said would extend enhanced federal unemployment benefits, defer some employees’ payroll taxes, continue a temporary ban on evictions and reduce the burden of student loans.

The Infinite Greed, Power And Controls Of Giant Corporations
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-09
The combination of greed and power often spin out of control and challenge the enforceable rule of law and the countervailing force of the organized civic community. | When greed and power are exercised by giant multinational corporations that escape the discipline of the nation-state, the potential for evil becomes infinite in nature. Enough is never enough. | Global giant companies, aided and abetted by their corporate attorneys and accountants, can literally decide how little taxes they are going to pay by shifting profits and expenses among different tax haven countries such as Ireland, Luxembourg, and Panama…

Neoliberal Centrists And The American Left
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-09
The rapid end to the electoral fortunes of the Anglo-American left in 2020 was engineered by radical centrists for the benefit of capital. What was banished, in addition to vibrant and informed opposition to an atrophied political class, was the prospect of Federal government programs that are both desired and needed by the American people. Even if the agents of atrophy get it together in coming weeks to toss a few crumbs to those economically displaced by the pandemic, current woes arrived decades into engineered economic decline.

National Uprising Exposes Divisions In The Ruling Class
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-09
For weeks on end, the George Floyd protests against racism and police violence shook America. Support for the movement overflowed all demographic boundaries as an estimated 10% of all American adults–some 25 million people–participated in at least one protest. However, although mass gatherings have continued unabated in some cities, in most of the country the torrential river has inevitably receded into its banks as it was deprived of a revolutionary outlet–for now. | The revived BLM movement has been a treasure trove of practical experience for the millions who drove it forward.

Beirut Devastated: The New Paradigm May Be Explosive
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-08-09
Sometimes the news cycle and the geo-political cycle simply part company. This is one such occasion — the devastation of Beirut Port. What happened there is destined to constitute a major geo-political event — whatever way its sequellae should cascade out and shape the future. There are good, historic reasons for this parting of the ways: One (which explains the regional silence), is that we have not yet had the forensics. Yes, satellite photos galore, but not the nitty-gritty from the ground. Not the forensics. | The main stream media is in a hurry to ‘shape’ its story of the explosion in advance of…

Trump Scuttles Economic Stimulus Negotiations
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-08-08
In recent days, the Democrats’ leaders, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Shumer, reportedly reduced the cost of their original ‘Heroes Act’ proposals by $1 trillion. Instead of the original cost of $3T in the Heroes Act passed last June, they were willing to agree to a reduced package of $2 trillion. Never mind the attempt to reach a compromise on some middle ground. The White House, through his assigned negotiator, staffer Mark Meadows, Trump rejected the Democrats’ offer. Meadows reportedly slammed the table (a two-bit amateur negotiating tactic) and walked out of negotiations with Pelosi-Shumer in a huff.

[Editorial] Self-determination and Indigenous health
The Lancet | thelancet.com | 2020-08-08
Colonisation is a fundamental determinant of Indigenous peoples’ health. Indigenous is a term defined by dislocation, and the effects of that displacement are felt by Indigenous peoples around the world. Aug 9, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, is a chance to look at the continuing effects of territorial removal, the destruction of people, culture, and languages, and the lack of self-determination (the right to determine one’s own social, cultural, and economic development), and their impact on Indigenous peoples’ health.

[Correspondence] COVID-19–a very visible pandemic
Johanna F Lindahl, Bjà∂rn Olsen, àÖke Lundkvist | thelancet.com | 2020-08-08
Johan Giesecke1 referred to the COVID-19 pandemic as an invisible pandemic, estimating that 25% of the Stockholm population was infected by the end of April, 2020, of which 98–99% are unaware of being infected. On April 1, 2020, the media reported that half of the Swedish population might be infected by the end of April, 2020.2 More conservative estimates suggested that at least one-third of the Stockholm population may be seropositive by mid-May, and later that Stockholm might reach herd immunity by mid-June.

[Perspectives] Together in a time of physical distancing
Sandro Galea | thelancet.com | 2020-08-08
Could there be a stranger time for a book about social connections than during a period when we have seen the most dramatic global effort ever to keep people away from one another? In the first half of 2020, the world was in the grip of fear about the COVID-19 pandemic. Many countries instituted some form of physical distancing for their whole populations to mitigate the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Emerging data from this period showed that reports of loneliness and attendant depression and anxiety increased compared with 2019.
