[Comment] Offline: Thinking the pandemic
Richard Horton | thelancet.com | 2021-02-27
The talk is now about data, not dates. But this pandemic has always been driven by facts. A rapid accumulation of evidence about the virus and the disease it causes. Layer upon layer of new information, repeatedly revising and reformulating our understanding. A steady stream of numbers, rates, and risks. Scientists and statisticians catapulted into the media to explain, expound, and explicate. Facts should indeed illuminate interpretations, guide responses, and optimise outcomes. But an emergency such as COVID-19 demands more–moments to think about what this pandemic means for us, to ask questions about its…

Boston halts advanced school program over 'equity' concerns after study finds it has too many 'white and Asian' students
rt.com | 2021-02-27
Public schools in Boston, Massachusetts are suspending new enrollment in an advanced study program citing concerns over "inequities" that supposedly emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic and the need to be more "anti-racist." | Fourth-graders hoping to get into the Advanced Work Classes (AWC) program are out of luck, after Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius called for a one-year hiatus for the program this week. The district's website now says "admission information will be available during the winter of 2021."

How To Unlearn Capitalism Through Cooperative Ownership
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2021-02-27
In the context of user-generated content platforms, the coop model is just such a natural fit. One of the principle questions that made a cooperative model feel relevant is this idea of, "Who's generating value, and who's capturing it?" Under capitalism, it's people with ownership who end up capturing most of the value. So at a base level, sharing ownership with a company's users and creators can align incentives. And that can dramatically affect the decisions that a platform makes, and steer it in a way that is to the benefit of the people who actually use it and rely on it. | What's Spotify valued at, a billion…

However, we were disappointed to see that HIV was overlooked again. According to statistics from WHO, 36 ∑7 million people are living with HIV and 1 ∑8 million become infected each year.

Eric J Topol | thelancet.com | 2021-02-27
For decades one of my favourite tasks in medicine has been reading 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs). I've always thought the wealth of information provided was impressive–eg, conduction and heart rhythm abnormalities, lack of blood supply or damage to the heart, chamber enlargement or hypertrophy, and inflammation of the pericardium. In the 1980s, when I did emergency coronary angiograms for patients with acute myocardial infarction, I marvelled at how the ECG accurately predicted the infarct-related artery and whether the occlusion was proximal or distal.

[Comment] Averting malaria transmission with lethal house lure intervention
Emmanuel Chanda | thelancet.com | 2021-02-27
In 2019, malaria accounted for 229 million cases and 409‚Äà000 deaths globally, with 94% of the burden occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.1 Despite determined efforts to combat malaria through definitive diagnoses, case management, and preventive interventions, the huge disease burden persists. Although effective vector control unequivocally curtails malaria transmission, integrated vector management has faced numerous challenges,2 including diminished effectiveness and uncertain sustainability of interventions, partly caused by insecticide resistance and residual transmission.

Julian Tudor Hart is seen variously as a researcher, an expert on high blood pressure, an epidemiologist, scientist, writer, political commentator, and social advocate. Few physicians manage to be expert in so many fields and none while also looking after the primary care needs of some 2100 people, which Tudor Hart did at Glyncorrwg, a former colliery village in south Wales, UK. His dedication to general practice meant his work was relevant and valued by fellow general practitioners (GPs).

Michelle S Hsiang, Davis Mumbengegwi, John Chimumbwa | thelancet.com | 2021-02-27
In malaria-endemic settings, vector control is a key public health intervention and accounts for the majority of global spending on malaria.1 Indoor residual spraying (IRS) of insecticide before peak malaria seasons is one widely used and effective approach.2 In southern Africa, IRS reduced clinical cases by 74–95% between 2000 and 2005, bringing the region to near elimination.3,4 In other parts of Africa, similarly dramatic effects have been observed in previously high-transmission settings.5 However, as transmission declines, the difficulty of widescale application for this resource-intensive intervention…

The Viewpoint by David Molyneux and colleagues,1 members of the International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication, notes the special challenges they face in preparing to certify that there are no Guinea worms remaining in humans or animals in the final seven countries that have not yet been certified as free of transmission, since eradication programmes detected the sustained transmission of Dracunculus medinensis among domestic dogs in Chad, Ethiopia, and Mali. We believe a comprehensive approach to evidence for certification might include a range of actions.

Andy Haines, Mayara Floss | thelancet.com | 2021-02-27
Julian Tudor Hart described the inverse relationship between the need for effective health care and its provision in compelling terms. During his career in primary care in a former coal mining community in south Wales, UK, he showed how, by integrating clinical care with an epidemiological approach, much can be done to improve health in disadvantaged populations.1 He wrote the inverse care law2 based on an analysis of the UK National Health Service (NHS) 50 years ago and yet its importance has transcended that historical period and its national context.

Screening plus Eave Tubes can provide protection against malaria in addition to the effects of insecticide-treated nets, offering potential for a new, cost-effective strategy to supplement existing vector control tools. Additional trials are needed to confirm these initial results and further optimise Eave Tubes and the lethal house lure concept to facilitate adoption.

Tell Biden: Stop bombing Syria!
Workers World Party | workers.org | 2021-02-26
It has taken only 36 days in office for the Biden administration to show the world, through a bombing attack on Syria, that it is belligerent, aggressive and hell-bent on war. There was only a short respite from Trump's vile words and actions. Now we have to face Biden's vile . . . | Continue reading Tell Biden: Stop bombing Syria! at Workers.org…

Joe Biden's US Foreign Policy: Return to the Old Normal?
Roger Harris | counterpunch.org | 2021-02-26
US President Biden bellicosely proclaimed, "American is back," in his major foreign policy priorities speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 19. Repeated twice for effect, Biden signaled the end of the Trump interregnum. No more assuring words could have been uttered for George W. Bush's former Defense Secretary Colin Powell and the 70 odd Republican national security officials, who wrote an open letter endorsing Biden out of fear that Trump would upset the bipartisan foreign policy consensus of regime change, forever wars, and the NATO alliance. Republican neo-cons now shelter in the Democrat's big…

Organizer LaTosha Brown on Building the New South
aclu.org | 2021-02-26
In November and January, voters across the country watched as the people of Georgia helped deliver both the presidency and the Senate to the Democrats this past election cycle, defying the perception of the state as a Republican stronghold. After Stacey Abrams' contentious loss in the 2018 race for governor, the effort to thwart voter suppression in the state and mobilize Black voters ramped up. As a result, Black Georgians showed up to the polls in droves and turned the state blue. | One of the activists responsible for thi…

All Risk, No Reward: The Perils and Absurdity of Iraq War 4.0
Editor | scheerpost.com | 2021-02-26
By Maj. Danny Sjursen / Reposted with permission from AntiWar Secretary of State Anthony Blinken might have been " outraged" by a rocket attack on a U.S. base in northern Iraq — that killed a foreign contractor and wounded an American service member and several other contractors — but he shouldn't have been surprised. After all, it's the muddled US military mission and ongoing troop presence… | Source…

The Pine-eyed Boy Escapes from the Belly of the Dark Night in the Fish's Tale
Edward Curtin | dissidentvoice.org | 2021-02-26
It's hard to say where things begin, but they do, as do we, and we are somehow in them and they in us, and a story begins. Then the story gets silently disclosed as we live it, even though most of us don't tell it until later, if we can find our tongues. But when …

Western Powers Can Save Iran Nuclear Deal — By Honoring It
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2021-02-26
Castigating Iran for alleged breaches is a cowardly distraction from the real problem. If the United States does not take the morally and legally honorable steps then the suspicion of an ulterior agenda will be fatal for resolving the impasse. | The international signatories to the nuclear accord with Iran have now a three-month window to salvage that landmark deal. The onus is on the United States to return to the Joint Comprehension Plan of Action (JCPOA) — as the accord is formally titled. Washington must do this unconditionally, beginning with lifting its economic sanctions from Iran. The European state…

By Eric ZUESSE | On February 4th was anonymously published online at telegra.ph not merely a data-dump such as Wikileaks famously does, but also a detailed news-report, which shows the key evidence, and which links to massive supporting evidence, proving that the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office of Her Majesty's Government ("HMG") has been, and is, the global operating center of a massive and deeply interconnected global conspiracy for the UK (Queen Elizabeth's Government) to defeat (conquer) Russia and any nation that is a…

Lawrence Wittner | zcomm.org | 2021-02-26
The world is currently engulfed in crises–most prominently, a disease pandemic, a climate catastrophe, and the prevalence of war–while individual nations are encountering enormous difficulties in coping with them.
