On Sunday, October 25, the left-wing sections in Belgrade organized “A Tea of Solidarity” in the park near the Faculty of Economics in the city to counter the far-right vigilantism against migrants in the city. Key states that could decide the result of the US election

A handful of states will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the 2020 United States presidential election. These are the “swing states”: so called because they will help swing the overall result either way. Most states are not swing states and will not change hands at this election — but safe states alone are not enough to get either Trump or Biden to the White House. Here are eight swing states to watch. All were won by Trump in 2016, but all are being strongly contested at this election by Biden.(PA Graphics)– Florida | This is the most hotly-contested swing state of them all. Florida has…

[Editorial] The US election 2020
The Lancet | thelancet.com | 2020-10-31
100 years ago, voters in the presidential election of 1920 were weary, trepidatious, and living with the spectre of pandemic and uncertainty. After the carnage of World War 1 and the multiple waves of influenza that enveloped the world between 1918 and 1920 (of the 50 million lives lost, 675‚Äà000 were American), the US economy had sunk into a deep recession as it adjusted to post-wartime production and consumption. Presidential candidate Warren G Harding expounded that “America’s present need is not heroics, but healing; not nostrums, but normalcy”.

Sanctions, Elections And Tactical Opportunities
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-10-31
First, the very existence of the Venezuelan nation-state is at stake in the upcoming elections. Of course, all countries on the periphery struggle for their existence in the unequal power relationship that exists between the Global North and the Global South. This is a global class struggle, where the aggressor is the imperialist pole, represented by NATO. They aim to recolonize our continent. | As such, the struggle in the upcoming elections is not with the Venezuelan opposition, which merely reflects the White House’s interests.

Radical Neoliberalism Was Born And Will Die In Chile
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-10-31
A wave of Indigenous peoples supporting the Luis Arce-David Choquehuanca presidential ticket defeated the main right-wing candidate, Carlos Mesa by 20 points, restoring democracy to Bolivia. Just days later around 80% of Chilean voters decided by referendum to re-found their nation with a new constitution. These momentous events represent twin victories for Latin American independence, the rejection of radical neoliberalism, a desire for socio-economic reform, and the insistence on self-determination from the bottom-up.

The riot in Naples and the choice between health and work
Fight Back | fightbacknews.org | 2020-10-31
Fight Back News Service is circulating the following statement from Italian Marxist- Leninist organization Fronte Popolare. | “Health is first and foremost, but without money no masses are sung”: so, we read on one of the many banners laid out during the spontaneous protest marches in Naples in these hours. The contrast between health and work, between physical well-being and economic well-being is a choice that in a real democracy we should not even imagine to make. Yet this is the choice put in front of us, in the South as well as in the North, throughout the all country. While the North — and especially…

Draft Debacle: Bellingcat Smears OPCW Whistleblower, Journalists With False Letter, Farcical Claims

[Correspondence] Asymptomatic health-care worker screening during the COVID-19 pandemic
Kevin Fennelly, Christopher C Whalen | thelancet.com | 2020-10-31
We applaud the establishment of the COVIDsortium by Thomas Treibel and colleagues1 as a bioresource focusing on asymptomatic health-care workers (HCWs).1 However, we disagree with the authors’ conclusion that “the rate of asymptomatic infection among HCWs more likely reflects general community transmission than in-hospital exposure”. This report was an ecological study subject to the ecological fallacy. Moreover, the figure compares symptomatic inpatients who were tested in hospital with asymptomatic HCWs.

Christian Gortázar and colleagues, in their response to our Correspondence about herd immunity in COVID-19,1 suggest that the mutation of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) might provide an alternative explanation for the observed decline in deaths in Europe. As evidence, they highlight the observation that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has mutated,2,3 alongside their own report arguing that the severity of COVID-19 has decreased over time.4 Unfortunately, their own study appears to have ended before many recoveries could have occurred, severely undermining the main conclusion.

Two D.C. Jeyaraj D Pandian, Yogeshwar Kalkonde, Ivy Anne Sebastian, Cynthia Felix, Gerard Urimubenshi, Jackie Bosch | thelancet.com | 2020-10-31
The burden of stroke is higher in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) than in high-income countries and is rising. Even though there are global policies and guidelines for implementing stroke care, there are many challenges in setting up stroke services in LMICs. Despite these challenges, there are many models of stroke care available in LMICs–eg, multidisciplinary team care led by a stroke neurologist, specialist-led care by neurologists, physician-led care, hub and spoke models incorporating stroke telemedicine (ie, telestroke), and task sharing involving community health workers.

[Series] Stroke systems of care in high-income countries: what is optimal?
Peter Langhorne, Heinrich J Audebert, Dominique A Cadilhac, Joosup Kim, Patrice Lindsay | thelancet.com | 2020-10-31
Stroke is a complex, time-sensitive, medical emergency that requires well functioning systems of care to optimise treatment and improve patient outcomes. Education and training campaigns are needed to improve both the recognition of stroke among the general public and the response of emergency medical services. Specialised stroke ambulances (mobile stroke units) have been piloted in many cities to speed up the diagnosis, triage, and emergency treatment of people with acute stroke symptoms. Hospital-based interdisciplinary stroke units remain the central feature of a modern stroke service.

[Comment] Offline: COVID-19–a crisis of power
Richard Horton | thelancet.com | 2020-10-31
COVID-19 is about the politics of the body. In a series of lectures and essays in the 1970s and early 1980s, Michel Foucault (who died in 1984) argued that the discipline of public health emerged with the birth of capitalism in the 18th century. The body came to be understood as an instrument of economic production, of labour power, and so became a subject of significant political interest. Medicine and public health were endorsed as tools to enhance these productive forces, to ensure that people were fit for work.

“Let the People Pick the President”: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral College
Staff | democracynow.org | 2020-10-30
As Donald Trump and Joe Biden make their final campaign pushes in battleground states that could decide the election, we speak with author and journalist Jesse Wegmen about the case for abolishing the Electoral College system altogether and moving toward a national popular vote for electing the president. Two of the last three presidents — George W. Bush and Donald Trump — came to office after losing the popular vote. “The Framers who met at the Constitutional Convention really had no idea what they were doing when they established how to pick a president,” says Wegman, New York Times editorial board…

Make a Plan to Resist
Paul Street | counterpunch.org | 2020-10-30
Nearly two and a half centuries since its founding, the United States, self-described homeland and headquarters of democracy, does not select its top elected official, the president, on the basis of a national popular vote. The Electoral College, devised by slave-owning constitutional framers for whom democracy was the ultimate nightmare, restricts the presidential election to the contest for all-or-nothing Elector slates in a relatively small number of states.

The challenges confronting US democracy in the upcoming presidential election are very real. With a genuine risk of post-election violence, the country’s unbroken history of a peaceful transition of power may have run its course. The challenges facing the victor will also be enormous, running a broad gamut of domestic and foreign policy issues that will remain the same regardless of who wins. Energy security will be near the top of this list, given its dual characteristic as a domestic and foreign policy matter, and the critical role it plays in the economic health of both the US and the world.
