[Perspectives] Uché Blackstock: dismantling structural racism in health care
Aarathi Prasad | thelancet.com | 2020-09-05
Uché Blackstock’s father, a Jamaican immigrant, arrived in New York State, USA, aged just 17 years. “Like many young immigrant men, he had a variety of jobs”, she recalls, “he was a mechanic, a refrigerator repair person, [and] he finally went to a Brooklyn college, where he met our mom.” Her mother, Dale Blackstock, was a physician who went to Harvard Medical School and practised in Brooklyn, but had to fight her way to college. “She grew up in poverty here in Brooklyn, where I was born, and where I live.

[Comment] Offline: Strengthening the voice of medicine in society
Richard Horton | thelancet.com | 2020-09-05
Do doctors have too much power? The influential French writer and philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy believes so. In his response to COVID-19, The Virus in the Age of Madness, Lévy complains that physicians have been transformed into “supermen and superwomen”. They have been endowed by politicians and publics “with extraordinary powers”. This bestowal of power is strange. For, Lévy argues, COVID-19 is nothing unusual–“that sort of disaster has always been with us”. What is different this time is how we have reacted.

[Correspondence] Clinical research in Chile: do not block the way of inquiry
Luca Valera, Paulina Ramos, Marcelo Barrientos, Fernando Altermatt, Sergio Ruiz, Rommy von Bernhardi, Mauricio Cuello | thelancet.com | 2020-09-05
Clinical research in Chile has grown rapidly during the past 20 years because of various research studies that were conceived and done by Chilean researchers, or through multicentre clinical trials. Nevertheless, clinical research in the areas of neurodegenerative diseases, dementia, or those involving people with mental disabilities has been impeded by the enactment of Law 20.584 in 2012.1 This law regulates people’s rights and duties concerning actions associated with their health care. Article 28 of this law states: “No person with a mental or intellectual disability, and who cannot express his or her will, ma…

Tucson police kill Chicano teen as he attempts to surrender
Fight Back | fightbacknews.org | 2020-09-05
Tucson, AZ – At 11 a.m. on August 26, undercover Tucson police officers set up a drug deal with a 17-year-old suspected of armed robberies. After the deal, the young Chicano, identified by the Tucson Police Department as Simon Pancho, realized it was a sting operation and attempted to run. Within four seconds he was hit with two bullets and died as medical help arrived. | On September 2, TPD released the body cam footage but the first four minutes is footage of the suspect’s alleged crimes of armed robbery. What’s more is the officer narrating the video used the phrase “at age 17, technically he is a juvenile” as…

[Correspondence] Lifting bans on pregnant girls in school
David K Evans, Amina Mendez Acosta | thelancet.com | 2020-09-05
The debate about whether to permit girls to attend school after becoming pregnant has been in the headlines in Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and elsewhere.1 Advocates for permitting girls to remain in school affirm that education is a human right.2 Critics propose that permitting girls to return might encourage more adolescent pregnancy, even as countries seek to reduce adolescent childbearing.3 Evidence on the consequences of girls returning to school after they become pregnant is limited, and identifying the effect on subsequent outcomes can be challenging.

[Editorial] COVID-19: a new lens for non-communicable diseases
The Lancet | thelancet.com | 2020-09-05
On Sept 19, 2011, global leaders met at the UN in New York, USA, to set an international agenda on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which cause three-quarters of global deaths. This was only the second time in history that the UN General Assembly had met to discuss a health issue (the first was for HIV/AIDS in 2016). In 2015, Sustainable Development Goal 3.4 set the ambitious target for countries to reduce their risk of premature mortality from NCDs by a third relative to 2015 levels by 2030. The Lancet NCD Countdown 2030, published on Sept 3, reveals that, among high-income countries, only Denmark, Luxembourg,…

The study aimed to recruit all patients older than 60 years with an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score of 3 or 4. However, the generalisability of Timothy G Short and colleagues’ conclusion is limited by only 5% of patients having an ASA status of 4.

On a cold February day in Amsterdam in 2016, an Alfa Romeo stopped by a canal side. A woman got out of the driver seat and went to get her toddler out of the car. To her horror, she realised the car was still moving and jumped back into the driver seat. She was too late to apply the brake and the car glided into the canal. Ruben, a jeweller who heard her screams and saw it happen, grabbed a hammer, dashed from his shop, and plunged into the icy water. Meanwhile, three other men joined him in the water.

Revolution Is Being Institutionalized in the Federal Government
Paul Craig Roberts | thealtworld.com | 2020-09-04
Most Americans are too removed from reality to be aware of the peril that they are in. Critical Race Theory, an anti-white doctrine designed to produce revolution in the United States in order to overthrow “white rule,” has long held sway in the universities and public schools. On an Executive Order from former President Obama, critical race theory now has infiltrated the Federal government cabinet agencies including the Treasury and FBI within the Department of Justice. US government employees, if white, are required to attend Soviet-style self-denunciation “sensitivity training sessions” and acknowledge their i…

A Silver Lining in the Rise of Neo-Fascism
_____ | strategic-culture.org | 2020-09-04
The only benefit from the rise of neo-fascist leaders in heretofore democratic nations is that the various fascist, neo-Nazi, racial and religious supremacists, and far-right terrorists have reared their ugly heads to the degree where it is now easier to identify them and their circle of contacts and organizations. When the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Poland, Turkey, and other similarly afflicted nations return to political normalcy, the forces of the far-right, already self-identified, can be rolled up, stripped of their weaponry and access to the Internet as threats to public safety.
