Yemeni Capital Struck By Heaviest Air Strikes In Years
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-06-21
It was around 6: 45am (03.45 GMT) on Tuesday morning when Hussein al-Samie’s son began crying, woken by an earth-shattering air strike that targeted al-Nahdain Mountain in the middle of Sanaa. | Samie’s son, Shadi, is four years old. He has no memory of the relentless air strikes that pounded the Houthi-held capital in 2015 and 2016 when the Saudi-led coalition first entered Yemen’s war. | Tuesday’s raid shook Samie’s house to its core, and with no experience of blasts this heavy and this close, Shadi’s nerves have been frayed as well. | “There were fiercer air strikes in 2015, but we adapted to the bombing then,”

Jalil Muntaqim, a Black Panther imprisoned since 1971, is one of thousands of elderly prisoners the United States has refused to free during the pandemic. | In 1971, two weeks shy of his twentieth birthday, Anthony Bottom, a young Black Panther, along with another Panther, Albert Nuh Washington, were arrested following a shootout with San Francisco police. The pair would be tried along with a third man, Herman Bell, for a separate attack: the May killing of two New York City police officers. They were convicted and sentenced to twenty-five years to life, the maximum penalty in New York at the time. The judge who…

Now it seems to be the really appropriate time when the ideological battle between the West and China is raging, and as a result of it, Hong Kong and the entire world is suffering. | I want to say that none of it is new, that the West already destabilized so many countries and territories, brainwashed tens of millions of young people. | I know, because in the past, I was one of them. Black New Orleans Waste Workers Build Power Against A Crisis
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-06-21
Sanitation workers in New Orleans have been out on strike for over a month now. On May 5, a group of sanitation workers, also known as “hoppers” (because they hop on and off the trucks to empty trash cans), walked off the job after frustrations around low pay and lack of safety equipment boiled over. They have held firm to their demands and to their brothers on the strike lines for over a month now. “All we’re trying to do is to get what we’re asking for, and then get back to work. We just want fair treatment,” Jonathan Edward, who’s been a hopper for over a decade, said. They are not alone–workers around t…

Police Violence And Racism Have Always Been Tools Of Capitalism
_____ | popularresistance.org | 2020-06-21
The system-wide challenges the United States faces with policing are entrenched and deeply rooted. When the historical and current practices of police are examined, it is evident police have been designed to uphold the status quo including racial injustice and class inequality. Whenever political movements develop to respond to racial and class unfairness, the police have undermined their politically-protected constitutional rights. | Police have used infiltration, surveillance, and violence against political movements seeking to end injustices throughout the history of the nation. Washington DC protesters topple statue of Confederate general Albert Pike
The Canary | thecanary.co | 2020-06-20
Black Lives Matter protesters have toppled the only statue of a Confederate general in the US capital and set it on fire on Juneteenth — the day marking the end of slavery in the US. | Cheering demonstrators jumped up and down as the 11ft statue of Albert Pike, wrapped with chains, wobbled on its high granite pedestal before falling backwards. | Protesters then set a bonfire and stood around it in a circle as the statue burned, saying “No justice, no peace!” and “No racist police!”. | Eyewitness accounts and videos posted on social media indicated that police were on the scene but did not intervene. | Donal…

[Comment] Framing health stories: Highlights 2020 photography competition open for submissions
Joanna Palmer | thelancet.com | 2020-06-20
The video and pictures of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN, USA, as police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck while he pleaded that he could not breathe, as well as photographs of subsequent anti-racism protests around the world, are some of the most powerful images this year. These pictures highlight the devastating impacts of structural racism and the deep inequities in our societies, and have given renewed urgency to the Black Lives Matter movement. This year has also brought moving and sometimes shocking photographs of health-care staff working in challenging conditions–too often…

Glasgow’s Far-Right Violence Is A Warning To Anti-Fascists

Many of those who organised around the exemplary “no evictions” campaign over the last couple of years gathered to show solidarity and support for people with no vote, no opportunity to work, no money, and living in a new country having fled conditions which were often the stuff of nightmares. Sadly, this was met with a “counter-protest.” Quite how anyone could protest against people being given decent food to eat should be beyond comprehension — but for the far-right, this seemed too much like treating people from other places and races with dignity. | Two sets of people faced-off. The modern news industry is in crisis. For years, formerly stalwart publications have been bought up, hollowed out, and sold for scrap by predatory (and often utterly incompetent) venture capital firms. The recent global outbreak of COVID-19 has further shattered the business as reporters and editors have been furloughed, or outright laid off, en masse. Now, as demonstrations across the country protesting George Floyd’s death at the knees of a Minneapolis cop grow in both scope and intensity, traditional newsrooms are finding their resources to cover these events spread thin. But into that coverage void has stepp…

Recent protests, catalyzed by the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, call for an end to racist police violence. Defund, disband, abolish–people who would never have even heard these words in discussions about the police are now seriously considering them. | The breakthroughs in the police debate would not have been possible without the protesters, who have remained steadfast despite being beaten and abused by police everywhere in the United States. In patients with severe COVID-19, tocilizumab was associated with significantly shorter duration of vasopressor support. [Editorial] Global governance for COVID-19 vaccines
The Lancet | thelancet.com | 2020-06-20
The COVID-19 pandemic has uncovered serious gaps in the health-care systems of many nations. In particular, it exposes a fragmented global governance system that does not have the structures to coordinate the pooling and sharing of resources needed to combat pandemics. Since the early days of the pandemic, medical protectionism has emerged as nations scrambled for their own stocks of personal protective equipment and ventilators. COVID-19 vaccines could be the next example. Already there is a danger of a vaccine bidding war, with governments competing for a limited number of doses, well before a vaccine even reac…

In 38 out of 43 countries for which provisional data were available, as of June 10, 2020, more men than women have died from COVID-19 despite a similar number of confirmed cases in each sex.1 In several countries, including the Netherlands, Dominican Republic, and Spain, about twice as many men as women have died from COVID-19.1 International Men’s Health Week on June 15–21 is an opportune time to focus attention on this issue and the need for a new and systematic approach to improve the health of men generally.

Severe gastrointestinal bleeding is frequent and associated with use of blood products and endoscopic and invasive procedures, including emergency surgery, which increases the risk of mortality.1 Interventions to stop bleeding include the use (often in an escalating manner) of proton-pump inhibitors, transfusion of blood products, therapeutic endoscopy, endovascular coiling, and open laparotomy.1,2 Tranexamic acid is also used in some patients in an attempt to inhibit blood clot breakdown by fibrinolysis that can occur in some cases.
