Why Antifascist and Pro-BDS Work Go Hand-in-Hand
Merula Furtado | truthout.org | 2018-06-12
Shortly after presidential candidate Donald Trump's hateful rhetoric and eventual rise to power emboldened a bigoted and anti-intellectual backlash at universities across the US, several colleagues and I who are engaged in Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) tactics against the Israeli state established a national network to fight fascism on college campuses, called the Campus Antifascist Network (CAN). | Zionists attacked us soon after. They targeted us precisely because we were also active in BDS work. The conservative blog Legal Insurrection sounded the alarm: | Palumbo-Liu and [Bill] Mullen, the organizers of the campus Antifa [sic] network, are two of the most aggressive anti-Israel pro-BDS faculty members in the country. They each have long histories of demonizing Israel and supporting the academic boycott of Israel…. | The teaming of the BDS and Antifa movements is the single most dangerous development I…

As Chicago Removes More Homeless Residents, a Federal Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Challenging Evictions
Kevin Gosztola | mintpressnews.com | 2018-06-12
A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago's evictions of homeless people, even as officials continue to remove homeless people and fail to provide affordable housing. | Andy Thayer, an activist with Uptown Tent City Organizers (UTCO), requested a public assembly permit for a protest encampment at Stewart Mall after the city indicated it had plans to renovate two viaducts under Lake Shore Drive, where homeless Chicagoans lived. | This location is across from the office of the ward's city council member, James Cappleman. Organizers believed the site would offer homeless people a "highly visible location in order to protest the lack of affordable housing in the city of Chicago." | The permit was denied in March and April of 2017, and on behalf of Thayer and UTCO, the Uptown People's Law Center (UPLC) requested an injunction to prevent the…

Recovery of Hurricane Ravaged Puerto Rico is Still "Decades" Away: Sonia Sotomayor
Mark Gruenberg | mintpressnews.com | 2018-06-12
WASHINGTON–Relying on constant communication with family and friends there, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor says Puerto Rico's recovery from last year's smash by two hurricanes is still decades away. | And, she adds, the island's difficulties are compounded by "a great deal of red tape" from the federal government. | Hurricanes Irma and Maria virtually smashed the island's schools, hospitals, civic buildings, roads and other infrastructure to smithereens. A Harvard Medical School study recently revealed 4,645 Puerto Ricans, at a minimum, died. That's far in excess of the official death toll of 64. | The numbers, however, may understate the case. The justice said, a Puerto Rico native — who later migrated to New York City with her parents — gave a snapshot view of conditions there during an informal Q-&-A at the American Constitution Society's luncheon on June 8 in D.C.

Nutrition Expert Explains the Shoddy Science Behind Gwyneth Paltrow's Bogus Claim You Should 'Detox' With Charcoal Lemonade

From gas and bloating to binding with your intestines, here are four reasons to avoid Goop's "charcoal lemonade. Today, charcoal products — from croissants to capsules — are everywhere. Even high street coffee chains have taken to selling charcoal "shots". Some vendors of these products claim that activated charcoal can boost your energy, brighten your skin and reduce wind and bloating. The main claim, though, is that these products can detoxify your body. It's easy to see where the claim that activated charcoal can detoxify the body comes from: it is used in emergency medicine to reduce the toxic load when someone has consumed poison or overdosed on medication. Watch: Customer Calls Out Lowe's for Racial Profiling After Exposing 'Inner City' Store's Controversial 'Loss Prevention' Policy
Noor Al-Sibai, Raw Story | alternet.org | 2018-06-12
"I want . . . some redress for the communities they have racially profiled, targeted and harassed," the customer said. | Lowe's is suspending its controversial receipt-checking protocol after a Philadelphia man exposed the racial profiling inherent in the process. Philadelphia's WHYY radio station reported that in "high-theft" stores, employees of the nationwide home improvement chain were instructed to check customer's receipts for proof of purchase. That tactic was at the center of a complaint publicized by black customer Will Mega, who found it odd that receipt-checkers stationed at exits went through all the items he purchased at a West Philadelphia Lowe's when he'd paid for them mere feet away. The protocol led Mega to conduct a social experiment: He went to a Lowe's in Haverford, a Philly suburb about a mile from his home. Upon exit, he asked his cashier if he'd need. . .

The False Choice Between Jailing Children and Separating Families
Merula Furtado | truthout.org | 2018-06-12
The Trump administration is giving Congress an ultimatum: overturn legal limits on the incarceration of children and expand family detention, or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will continue to separate families who illegally cross the border. | The administration is asking Congress to roll back protections for migrant children in immigration laws to allow DHS officials to more easily jail and deport them. The changes would also make it more difficult for children to pursue asylum. | Moreover, White House officials are blaming Democrats for an increase in migrants at the border, saying their refusal to spend more on border security has given immigrants fleeing Central America incentives to enter the US without permission. NRA's Nutty Florida Questionnaire Suggests Gun Lobby's Power May Be Slipping
Amanda Marcotte, Salon | alternet.org | 2018-06-12
Is God against gun control? Unhinged Florida questionnaire suggests the NRA may be in a downward spiral | The National Rifle Association (NRA) in Florida, under the state leadership of long-time lobbyist Marion Hammer, has had a death grip on power in state politics for years, even decades. But after two of the most high-profile mass shootings in American history, the Orlando nightclub shooting two years ago this week and the Parkland high school shooting in February — which collectively led to the deaths of 66 people and injured another 70 — the political tide may be turning against America's biggest gun lobby. In March the nearly unthinkable happened when Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, signed a bill passed by the Republican-controlled Florida legislature that actually bucked the NRA by passing a modest set of restrictions on gun. . .

Trump's Attacks on Health Care Threatens Treatment for People With Opioid Disorders
Merula Furtado | truthout.org | 2018-06-12

Petulance as Statecraft: Trump Does Canada
Ron Jacobs | counterpunch.org | 2018-06-12
When it comes to Donald Trump, I tend to ignore his self-centered shenanigans. I figure the substance (when there is any) will become apparent later when his staff clarifies the mad king's meaning. However, the recent series of events around the G-7 were something beyond the norm. This is especially true when one notes that John Bolton was by Trump's side when the now infamous picture of him sitting across the table from much of the rest of the capitalist world with his arms folded and an angry look on his face was taken. The combination of Trump and Bolton is a dangerous one. Bolton's demonic designs for world conquest have always been part of the neocon program, but other powers have held his most maniacal plans in check. Donald Trump is less likely to do so and John Bolton knows this. One can be sure he is already plotting how to start the next war.

Donald Trump Went to North Korea for a Giant Photo-Op — And Nothing Else

Trump repeatedly said that it was a "great honor" to meet with the North Korean dictator while Kim indicated that it was hard to get there but was glad they were meeting. School Valedictorian Lulabel Seitz Tried to Speak About Sexual Assault — Then Her Microphone was Cut Off

A New Day for the Korean Peninsula: Christine Ahn Hails Denuclearization Pledge & New Peace Process
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-06-12
On Tuesday, President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sat down for two hours in private, with only their two interpreters, for a historic summit held in Singapore. In a joint statement following the meeting, Trump and Kim pledged to recover the remains of American prisoners of war and those missing in action from the Korean War. The commitment was one of four plans outlined by the leaders after their historic summit, where they promised to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Elizabeth Warren: "There Are Not Enough … Democrats Willing to Take On the Billionaire Class"

Earlier this year, 17 Senate Democrats joined every Senate Republican in voting to weaken bank regulations put in place after the 2008 financial crisis. | The most strident opponent of these changes was Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren. A former bank bailout oversight chief and longtime expert on financial issues, Warren explicitly excoriated her Democratic colleagues for supporting the changes in a last-bid effort to stop them. It is rare for a member of Congress to openly castigate members of their party over a high-profile vote. | In an interview with The Intercept's Mehdi Hasan for his Deconstructed podcast, Warren at first avoided criticizing her Democratic colleagues when asked about that vote. | "So on the bankers' front, we have the Dodd-Frank law. Rep. Ro Khanna: If U.S.-North Korea Summit Happened Under Obama, Democrats Would Be Cheering
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-06-12
As President Trump prepared for his historic summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other top Democrats penned a letter last week threatening to maintain or even strengthen sanctions against North Korea if Trump did not ensure that the country completely dismantle all of its nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. The lawmakers wrote, "Any deal that explicitly or implicitly gives North Korea sanctions relief for anything other than the verifiable performance of its obligations to dismantle its nuclear and missile arsenal is a bad deal." Progressives have blasted the letter for its hardline stance. The Discovery of a Map Made by a Native American is Reshaping What We Think About the Lewis & Clark Expedition

"Monumental doesn't fully cover the importance of this discovery. " | An important historical map drawn by a Native American leader for renowned American expedition leaders Meriwether Lewis and William Clark was recently discovered in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. "Monumental doesn't fully cover the importance of this discovery," says historian Clay Jenkinson. "This is easily the best-preserved of the Native American maps drawn for Lewis and Clark, and represents the most important discovery in the Lewis and Clark world since 55 letters by William Clark were discovered in a Louisville attic in the 1980s. " Discovered by a University of New Mexico graduate student who was working on Native American cartography, the map was drawn by an Arikara leader named Too Né, whom Lewis and Clark met on today's North Dakota-South Dakota border on October 8, 1804. 'We Will Have a Terrific Relationship': Trump Calls It an 'Honor' to Meet North Korea's Dictator Kim Jong-un
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-11
Trump gave no sign of concern for the dictator's abuse of his people and extreme violations of human rights. | In a meeting that was both historic and deeply troubling, President Donald Trump praised North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as "honorable" and spoke optimistically about the prospect of working together. But as they met in the relative serenity and peace at a Singaporean resort, Trump made no mention of the dictator's oppression of his own people, his lawless regime that has killed Americans, or the extraordinary level of human rights abuses that continue under his watch. "We will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt," Trump said. Kim's comments, as told through a translator, were somewhat more measured. "Well, it was not easy to get here," he said. "The past worked as fetters on our limbs, and the old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles. . .

'They Could Have Skyped': MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace Mocks Trump for Tamping Down Expectations Ahead of North Korea Summit

MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace pointed out Monday that Trump himself now seems to be setting up expectations to be pretty low — especially after the disastrous G-7 meeting last week. "Fresh off the heels of a diplomatic debacle in Canada in which Donald Trump managed to clash with some of America's oldest and closest allies, Trump is trying his luck with one of America's adversaries, Kim Jong-un, in the hope that upon meeting Donald Trump, Kim will agree to denuclearize the Korean peninsula," Wallace said on her show "Deadline: White House. Trump Plans to Ignore North Korea's Human Rights Abuses in Summit with Dictator
Hunter, Daily Kos | alternet.org | 2018-06-11
The totalitarian leader seems to be facing no responsibility for his horrific abuses. | Well of course Trump isn't going to bring up human rights when meeting with the North Korean dictator. That'd be insulting to the nuclear rogue state, and Trump is only insulting to U. S. allies, not dictators. But two administration officials tell NBC News the U. S. has decided not to bring up human rights at the summit. And Trump has made clear he would be willing to offer security guarantees and financial aid to Kim if he gives up his nuclear arsenal. Just to refresh the national memory, an American college student recently died after being subjected to brutal treatment in a North Korean prison, one of hundreds of thousands to suffer violence and abuse by the family-run dictatorship.
