Anthony Bourdain: The Last Gasp of CNN's Original Vision
Sam Husseini | fair.org | 2018-06-09
Anthony Bourdain on a train in Sri Lanka (Parts Unknown, 10/29/17) | CNN began with the slogan, articulated by its founder Ted Turner: "The news is the star." | That has long since ceased to be a reflection of what CNN does. Despite promoting itself with its dubious "facts first" slogan, the network endlessly touts its celebrity pundits and anchors: Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, Chris Cuomo, Christiane Amanpour, Fareed Zakaria, et al. The view of the world that they depict is what the viewer needs to understand–not the world itself. | Anthony Bourdain didn't join CNN until 2013, didn't do "news" per se, and his own personality was certainly a major part of his show, Parts Unknown, but the lens was largely on the places Bourdain went, whether Armenia or West Virginia, and the people he met there. This work was…

Beware the Democrats and Their Good Billionaires
Staff | truthdig.com | 2018-06-09
When I was 16 or 17, I used to drive to Pittsburgh from the small town where I lived to pretend to shop in Shadyside, a neighborhood with a relatively ritzy little shopping district, and, more importantly, to sit for at least an hour in the Starbucks on Copeland Street, where the most beautiful boy I'd ever seen worked. He was thin and had close-cropped hair and was probably a freshman in college–deliriously and seductively older to a high school kid like me. Half the time he wasn't even there, and I'd just sit nursing a drink and hoping he'd somehow materialize to start a shift. We spoke exactly once: I was feigning interest in the shelf of whole beans and bric-a-brac for sale, and he asked if I needed assistance. I can't imagine what I choked out in response before I fled…

Is Trump Becoming a Dictator? He's Already Showing 7 of 10 Notable Signs
Chris Sosa, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-08
Our president represents the threat to democracy many feared upon his shocking election. | In late 2016, Harvard University's Robert and Renée Belfer professor of international relations Stephen M. Walt wrote a 10-point list for analyzing whether a president is a dictator. Less than half-way through his first term, Trump has fulfilled seven of the 10 criteria. Trump Systematically Attempts to Intimidate the MediaThe president routinely bullies the press, creating environments that range from hostile to physically unsafe. This began during the campaign and continues to this day, as Trump riles rally crowds against the press and repeatedly attacks them on social media. "These people, they hate your guts," he recently told a rally about the press. The president reportedly told a reporter off-camera that he intentionally bullies the press to "demean" and "discredit" them. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Is 70 This Year — but Where's the Justice for Chagos?
Samantha Borek | truthout.org | 2018-06-08
People like to talk about "conspiracy theories," but now-declassified records show that in the 1960s there was a literal conspiracy instigated by the British Foreign Office, at the behest of the US, to cleanse the population of the Chagos archipelago so that the US could build a military base there. The islands are located in the Indian Ocean, south of India and east of Africa. The largest of the islands is Diego Garcia. From there, the US has bombed Afghanistan and Iraq without needing further refuelling bases. | The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is 70 this year. Not only should it protect the people of Chagos, the survivors and their offspring who now live in the UK and Mauritius, but in addition, the tragic case of the islanders reveals that Britons are citizens on paper but de facto royal subjects. Partisan Gerrymandering May Soon Be Unconstitutional
Fran Korten | mintpressnews.com | 2018-06-08
Sometime before June 25, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hand down rulings on two cases with momentous impacts on who controls power in state legislatures and the U.S. Congress. "These cases are likely to be the most important democracy cases in decades," says Michael Li, senior counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University. | The cases test the constitutionality of partisan gerrymandering. They involve Wisconsin and Maryland, but the court's decisions will have much broader effects. After the 2020 census, all states will redraw their electoral maps to account for population shifts within their states. | Under current law, redistricting presents a ripe opportunity for extreme political gerrymandering, especially in states where a single party controls the state legislature and the governorship. North Carolina, where Republicans control both houses of the state assembly and have a Republican…

Kathy Kelly on Afghanistan: Destitution and Hunger Must Be Addressed to Achieve Peace
Samantha Borek | truthout.org | 2018-06-08
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has announced an unconditional ceasefire with the Taliban to last until June 20. The ceasefire comes after Muslim clerics in Afghanistan issued a fatwa–or religious ruling–against suicide bombings, after an attack Monday, claimed by ISIS, killed 14 people who had gathered for a clerics' peace summit in Kabul. This comes as the BBC is reporting that the number of bombs dropped by the US Air Force has surged dramatically since President Trump announced his Afghanistan strategy and committed more troops to the conflict last August; new rules of engagement have made it easier for US forces to carry out strikes against the Taliban. We speak to Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, a campaign to end US military and economic warfare. She has made many trips to Afghanistan and just returned from a trip this week.

Humor and truth help expose profound colonialism, racism, and straight-up ridiculousness used to sell luxury products. | You may have heard of Shinola, the racist shoe-polish company of the early 20th century whose brand was reinvented by hypercapitalists from Texas into the feel-good story of Detroit, marketing $1,100 watches and bicycles for more than what many Detroiters would pay for a car. Shinola's marketing might make rich white folk feel like they're "saving" Detroit by purchasing one of those incredibly overpriced, made in China/assembled in the USA by poor black people, pieces. But what the company is really doing is reinforcing a racist, plantation mentality, and selling it to the world like they are martyrs saving Detroit with each and every watch that bears its name. 'A Disgusting Smear of a Reporter': BuzzFeed News Editor Warns DOJ's Latest Attack on the Press Is Deeply Troubling

The Justice Department's decision to seize a journalist's communications records sparked widespread criticism. | The Justice Department's seizure of email and phone records from New York Timesreporter Ali Watkins sparked widespread criticism and fear of an attack on the First Amendment when it was revealed on Thursday. To Talk or Not to Talk? We're Facing a Tough Dilemma of Suicide Contagion
The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-06-08
Our kids are facing a tough dichotomy. | In recent years, research has shown that suicide has the potential to spread through social networks — a phenomenon some have dubbed "suicide contagion. " | Sophisticated, diverse statistical modeling techniques have largely reached the same conclusion: if someone is exposed to the suicide attempt or death of a friend, it increases that person's risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts. | The consequences can be devastating for families, classmates and townspeople, who are left struggling to understand why clusters of suicides are occurring in their communities, from Newton, Massachusetts to Palo Alto, California. | It's a challenging question that scientists have struggled to answer for decades. The role of suicide contagion is perhaps one of the least understood aspects of suicide, which puts us at a significant disadvantage when it comes to. . .

'They Feel the Noose Closing': Democratic Senator Argues Trump's Defenders Are Getting Desperate
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-08
"Trump is not King. " | The defense strategy for President Donald Trump and his allies has become increasingly brazen and outlandish in recent weeks, and it now includes sweeping claims of executive power and a dismissive attitude toward opponents. But Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) argued on MSNBC's "The Beat with Ari Melber," these bold assertions are likely signs of the precariousness of the president's position, not his strength. Last weekend, the president's lawyer argued that it was essentially impossible for the president to obstruct justice, given his office. And this week, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he is certain he can pardon himself — an ambiguous constitutional matter that has never been ruled on — leading many to argue that he sees himself as unconstrained by the legal requirements. Obama, who appeared on an episode of Bourdain's CNN series "Parts Unknown" set in Hanoi, Vietnam, took to Twitter to acknowledge Bourdain's unique "ability to bring us together. ""'Low plastic stool, cheap but delicious noodles, cold Hanoi beer," Obama wrote. "This is how I'll remember Tony. He taught us about food — but more importantly, about its ability to bring us together. To make us a little less afraid of the unknown. We'll miss him. SAN FRANCISCO–Facebook shared personal information culled from its users' profiles with other companies after the date when executives have said the social network prevented third-party developers from gaining access to the data, the company confirmed Friday. | The records included information about the friends of Facebook users, including phone numbers and breakdowns analyzing the degrees of separation between people on the social networks, according to a Wall Street Journal report. | Facebook confirmed the report, acknowledging the information was given to a "small number" of companies including RBC Capital Markets and Nissan Motor Co., advertisers and other business partners. | The companies had access to the data during a stretch of time in 2015 after Facebook had locked out most developers who build apps that work on its social network. Facebook gave select "whitelisted" companies extensions before they were also blocked from getting…

CNN Host Explains How the Republican Party Became the Party of Trump
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-08
"The elites in Washington were still repeating the Reagan formula. " | CNN host Fareed Zakaria explained on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" Friday night the bizarre transformation the Republican Party has undergone in recent years — and how it's become all about President Donald Trump. The change was particularly evident on Friday, as Trump was distancing himself from our G-7 allies and absurdly demanding that Russia be invited to rejoin the group. While Trump has certainly continued and endorsed many standard GOP policies, this kind of shift would never have taken place under a President Marco Rubio or a President Ted Cruz — and yet Republicans offer up little resistance. "I think what happened was . . . Trump recognized –and in the primaries, you see this — the base of the Republican Party was in a completely different place than the elites in Washington. . .

This One Shocking Factor Can Make You 4600 Percent More Likely To Become an Addict
Johann Hari, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-08
It was discovered quite by accident — in part of a study of a totally different subject. | One of my earliest memories is of trying to wake up one of my relatives, and not being able to. As I got older, I understood why. We had addiction in my family. And as I watched some of my other close relatives become addicts, I asked myself several questions, but one in particular seemed haunting and insistent: why does addiction so often run in families? Why does it seem to pass from mother to daughter, from father to son, as though it were some dark genetic twist? I went on a long journey to find the answers to these questions — I describe it in my book 'Chasing The Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs. ' My research was book-ended. . .

'Pardoning Blagojevich Would Be Stupid': GOP Pushes Back on Trump's Idea to Free the Corrupt Governor
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-08
The former Illinois governor and Martha Stewart are among the high-profile people Trump has suggested he might pardon. | As President Donald Trump enjoys the thrills of wielding his constitutional pardon power, some members of his own party are warning him to not go too far. But they're not warning him against pardoning Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, or even himself — they're warning him against pardoning former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. Blagojevich is serving a 14-year sentence after he was sentenced on multiple charges of political corruption, including the allegation that he was attempting to sell President Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat after the 2008 election. The governor became a national disgrace after the conviction, known for the colorful language he used on private recordings related to the charges. GOP lawmakers from Illinois are unsurprisingly concerned, then, about Trump's recent suggestion that he might. . .

State's Rights Bill on Marijuana Threatens to Divide Trump Administration
Merula Furtado | truthout.org | 2018-06-08
Lawmakers have introduced bipartisan legislation that would end federal marijuana prohibition in states that have legalized cannabis products for medical and recreational use. President Trump said on Friday that he would "probably" support the bill, setting the stage for a potential showdown with the Justice Department and one of his least favorite employees: Attorney General Jeff Sessions. | Unveiled on Thursday by members of Congress from states that have legalized weed, the legislation takes a "state's rights" approach to marijuana favored by many Republicans and even Trump. The bill, known as the STATES Act, would not legalize marijuana nationally. Instead, it allows US states, territories and tribal governments to develop their own marijuana regulations without fear of federal interference, as long as the regulations meet certain guidelines. | Sessions, a seasoned drug warrior who hates marijuana, has rescinded an Obama-era…

Rotten to the Heart: Authoritarian Chickens Roosting at Home
Paul Street | counterpunch.org | 2018-06-08
Wall Street's control of Washington and the related imperial agenda of the "Pentagon System" were advanced more effectively by the nation's first Black president than they could have been by stiff and wealthy white Republicans like John McCain or Mitt Romney. The reigning U.S. system of corporate and imperial "inverted totalitarianism" was given a deadly, fake-democratic re-branding. The underlying "rightward drift" sharpened, fed by a widespread and easily Republican-exploited sense of popular abandonment and betrayal, as the Democrats depressed and demobilized their own purported popular base.
