Is Putin Really Ready To "Ditch" Iran?
The Saker | iranian.com | 2018-06-07
The topic of Russian actions in Syria still continues to fascinate and create a great deal of polemics. This makes senses — the issue is exceedingly important on many levels, including pragmatic and moral ones, and today I want to stick strictly to the pragmatic level and set aside, just for a while, moral/ethical/spiritual considerations. Against the Cuba Embargo, Man-Made Hurricane, Wall before the Wall
Arturo Desimone | counterpunch.org | 2018-06-07
The island in the shape of a caiman has held its breath for 40 years. When will the blockade fall? How could the West have spoken of the fall of iron curtains, and then kept this one iron curtain, the blockade, oxidizing and cutting the toes of the island people while sermonizing to their need for freedom? What is the revenue the bastards and patent office made on that Miamian concoction, the mixed drink "Cuba Libre"? And where's the crystal river of agua ardiente(literally, "burning water") liquor, promising forgetfulness and severance, adding melody to melancholy?

A Tale Of Two Worlds: America's Police State Vs. College Campuses
Nick Pemberton | counterpunch.org | 2018-06-07
America is a police state. 2.3 million people are held in prison. People go to jail 11 million times a year. People go to jail most often without conviction of a crime. Many cannot afford to post bail and are caught in jail until their trial. 1 in 5 incarcerated people are in jail for a drug offense. 1 in 37 US adults are under correctional supervision. The U.S. has 21% of the world's prisoners, with 34% of them being African American. These prisoners are often treated as slave labor, with few to no laws protecting their rights.

Noam Chomsky Explains Exactly What's Wrong with Libertarianism

Anarchism "assumes that the burden of proof for anyone in a position of power and authority lies on them," explains Chomsky. | The following is the adapted text of an interview that first appeared in Modern Success magazine. So many things have been written about, and discussed by, Professor Chomsky, it was a challenge to think of anything new to ask him: like the grandparent you can't think of what to get for Christmas because they already have everything. So I chose to be a bit selfish and ask him what I've always wanted to ask him. As an out-spoken, actual, live-and-breathing anarchist, I wanted to know how he could align himself with such a controversial and marginal position. Michael S. The Empire's Media and the Quest for Veto Authority in the Americas
Joe Emersberger | fair.org | 2018-06-06
Christian Science Monitor ( 4/11/18) | In April, the Summit of the Americas in Peru predictably led to articles fretting about declining US influence in the Western Hemisphere. Analysts were quoted (Christian Science Monitor, 4/11/18) worrying that Trump's belligerent and racist outbursts would weaken Washington's power in the region. | Closer ties to the United States, concerned "experts" suggest, would be the logical and inevitable choice of democracies in the region, if only US policy makers used enough finesse. Alfonso Serrano's New York Times op-ed ( 4/16/18) suggested the US should counter Chinese influence with "friendly gestures" such as "re-enter[ing] the Trans-Pacific Partnership"–a trade agreement designed to give foreign corporations veto power over regulatory policies voters might want their governments to enact. | A few months earlier, a New York Times editorial ( 2/5/18) headlined "China, Elbows…

Dinosaurs' Deaths May Hold Clues for Climate Change
Staff | truthdig.com | 2018-06-06
US geologists have identified the moment of the dinosaurs' death in the Earth's deep past as the time when the climate changed, even faster and more severely than it is changing as a consequence of human action. | That fateful moment occurred on the day around 65 million years ago when a vast comet or asteroid smashed into Earth over what is now Chicxulub in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico and brought the Cretaceous era to a close. | The scientists used tiny bits of fish scales, teeth and bones to compose a temperature chart for the last 50,000 years of the Cretaceous, and the first 100,000 years of the Palaeogene, when planet Earth changed forever. | The planetary average temperatures rose around 5 ∞C [9 F] and stayed perilously hotter for at least another 100,000 years, and in the course of…

Trump Will Face One Big Problem at the North Korea Summit — He's a Terrible Negotiator
Mark Sumner, Daily Kos | alternet.org | 2018-06-06
The president can't stop himself from being impulsive. | At the moment the on, off, on summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un appears to be in the on phase. "Appears" because that's before North Korea has responded to claims from Rudy Giuliani that Kim begged Trump for the summit on his knees. But Trump does seem to be sticking to giving Kim exactly what he wanted otherwise–a meeting as equals, on neutral ground, with no preconditions. All of which means that getting to this stage scores a lot of points for the North Korean leader. While Trump isn't laying out any advance conditions, he does have some goals for the meeting. The White House wants North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to commit to a timetable to surrender his country's nuclear arsenal when he meets President Donald Trump next week. . .

Italy's Political Crisis Is a European Union Crisis
Marshall Auerback, Independent Media Institute | alternet.org | 2018-06-06
The EU's elites must relent on austerity, lest the euro blow to pieces. | Do leopards change their spots? Because that's really the question everybody has to ask, now that Italy's president, Sergio Mattarella, has finally approved a new Italian government. The new coalition represents an odd mixture of euro-skeptical technocrats and populist xenophobes from two anti-establishment parties, Five Star Movement and the League, who finally cobbled together a mutually acceptable Cabinet that secured presidential approval (earlier vetoed). Can the Brussels elites, who increasingly call the shots in Europe, live with this new government, or will their ongoing insistence on the austerity-biased policy status quo cause the new coalition to fall apart? If the latter, it will almost certainly lead to a new, more radical political configuration that could amount to a referendum on Italy's continued membership in the monetary union. This has. . .

Trump's Disinvitation of the Philadelphia Eagles: An Act of Symbolic Racism

It is an American tradition that the winner of the Super Bowl is honored with a visit to the White House. But these are not normal times. | Like the petulant man-child he is, President Donald Trump cancelled the 2018 NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles' visit to the White House. | On Twitter, Trump announced it this way: | The Philadelphia Eagles Football Team was invited to the White House. Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come, and we canceled the event. Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Here's How a Single Preposterous Tweet Unleashed Trump's Latest False Attacks on the Russia Probe
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-06
Though it's been repeatedly debunked, Trump is still talking about "spygate. " | Even after many of President Donald Trump's own allies have rejected his unfounded assertions of a massive FBI conspiracy against his campaign, he is continuing to hold on to the theory without a shred of evidence. His latest attack against the FBI over what he has ludicrously dubbed "spygate" stems from a single tweet and rests on a patently absurd interpretation of the relevant texts. "Wow, Strzok-Page, the incompetent & corrupt FBI lovers, have texts referring to a counter-intelligence operation into the Trump Campaign dating way back to December, 2015," Trump tweeted on Tuesday night. "SPYGATE is in full force! Is the Mainstream Media interested yet? Big stuff! Can Your Insurer Retroactively Deny Coverage for "Avoidable" ER Visits?
Cherise | truthout.org | 2018-06-06
Visiting the emergency room is expensive, and a whole lot of Americans hit the ER every year — with some critics claiming that many of these visits are unnecessary. | In fact, one insurer thinks it's come up with an excellent way to addressing this issue: Anthem refuses to pay for visits it deems " avoidable." And that can leave some patients holding very large bills. | The way people utilize emergency departments can be complex. For people who are underinsured or uninsured, the ER may be seen as the best way to quickly access treatment. For those with good insurance coverage, poor communication about access to urgent care — which provides appointments quickly within regular work hours — can be an issue. At other times, long waits for available appointments may push people to the ER,…

Mueller Is Targeting New Evidence to Uncover the Secret Communications Between Witnesses in the Russia Probe
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-06
Out of fear of a subpoena, witnesses have reportedly complied with the special counsel. | Special counsel Robert Mueller has asked witnesses to hand over new evidence potentially related to the Russia investigation, according to a new report from CNBC: cell phones containing encrypted messages. The report found that the witnesses have complied with Mueller's request out of a fear of a subpoena. The evidence could be key to uncovering any wrongdoing on behalf of central figures in the investigation, and the fact that they used secure messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Signal that encrypt users' data could be evidence that they were aware they were violating the law. The news here is that Trump's staffers expect the Quebec meeting to go badly–in fact, they seem to expect it's going to be an outright fiasco.
