Saudis Threaten Military Response if Qatar Deploys Russian Anti-Aircraft Missiles
Emma Fiala | mintpressnews.com | 2018-06-05
RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA — Saudi Arabia's King Salman has threatened to take military action against Qatar if the nation follows through with plans to install a Russian S-400 anti-aircraft defense system. The Saudi king penned a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, expressing his concern over negotiations between Qatar and Russia: The kingdom would be ready to take all necessary measures to eliminate this defense system, including military action." | While Salman stated that Saudi Arabia aims to maintain peace in the region by preventing the sale of the Russian defense system, the kingdom's actions speak otherwise. Under the guise of maintaining peace, Saudi Arabia is responding to the perceived threat of a growing alliance between Iran and Qatar due to Iran's economic growth as well as anti-western imperialist ideology in the region. | In 2017, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic and economic…

California Mayor Has a Radical Plan to Fight Poverty
Ilana Novick | truthdig.com | 2018-06-05
Universal basic income has gained traction as a weapon in the war against poverty. The policy, often referred to as UBI, nearly made it all the way onto Hillary Clinton's policy platform as she ramped up her 2016 presidential campaign. Clinton claimed in a 2017 interview with Vox that she "couldn't make the numbers work" nationally, but Michael Tubbs, the 27-year-old mayor of Stockton, Calif., is starting smaller. | As Reuters reports in a story published Monday, Tubbs is planning to offer a group of city residents a no-strings-attached income of $500 per month as part of a campaign to fight poverty. The experimental program should start in early 2019, with an as-yet-undecided number of Stockton residents in the test pool. The program is being funded by the Economic Security Project, a philanthropic network started by Facebook co-founder…

Is There Too Much Democracy In The Middle East?

Fox News Apologizes After Using Misleading Image to Bolster Trump's Attacks on Kneeling NFL Players
Chris Sosa, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-06-05
Someone should tell the network that prayer often involves kneeling. | During a report about President Donald Trump canceling a visit by the Philadelphia Eagles to the White House, Fox News played at least one misleading image of the NFL players in prayer (seen above). The image was presented as an example of the players kneeling during the national anthem in protest against police brutality. Fox News' Christopher Wallace, executive producer of the show on which the footage aired, released a formal apology on behalf of the network following the misleading reporting. "During our report about President Trump canceling the Philadelphia Eagles trip to the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl win, we showed unrelated footage of players kneeling in prayer," the statement said. "To clarify, no members of the team knelt in protest during the national anthem throughout regular or post-season last. . .

Plastic Tsunamis Threaten Coast in Latin America
Samantha Borek | truthout.org | 2018-06-05

| Rio de Janeiro — Although Latin America produces just five percent of the world's plastic, it imports billions of tons annually for the use of all kinds of products, some of which end up in the sea as garbage. | It thus contributes to this kind of artificial tsunami that threatens the biodiversity of the oceans, where 13 million tons of waste, mostly disposable plastics, are dumped each year at a global level, according to UN Environment — enough to wrap around the Earth four times. | The impact is such that it also affects human health, as this resistant waste enters the food chain, and has led the United Nations to declare "Beat Plastic…

Did Michael Pollan Kill God? Inside the NYT Food Columnist's Exploration of Magic Mushrooms
Marty Kaplan, Forward | alternet.org | 2018-06-05
From Pollan's new book "How to Change Your Mind" — currently on top of the New York Times best-seller list — it looks like he got what he was after. | Michael Pollan had enlightenment envy. Unlike most patients in clinical trials of psilocybin, when Pollan ate a magic mushroom, he wasn't terrified by a terminal illness, he wasn't suffering from alcoholism or depression and he hadn't been diagnosed with a personality disorder. But he "envied the radical new perspectives" of the people in psychedelic therapy whom he interviewed, and he found the idea of "shaking the snow globe" of his mental life appealing. "I also wasn't sure I'd ever had a spiritual experience," he said, and in late middle age, he felt "time was growing short. Here's How Skateboarding Flipped Its White Male Image to Welcome the Entire World
The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-06-05
Having cast aside narrow stereotypes as to who a rider should be, skateboarding's new found diversity is its greatest strength. | For many, skateboarding still conjures up images of Californian dudes called Brad and Jay tearing up sun-baked swimming pools in the 1970s, their tanned torsos and blonde hair contrasting perfectly with blue skies and billowing palm trees. Or perhaps, since the rise of street-based skateboarding in the 1990s, skateboarders are more commonly thought of as roving bands of risk takers, usurping public squares, stairs and handrails to create a punkish alternative to "normal" city life. While both these versions of the sport still thrive, skateboarding is no longer the preserve of urban rebels. There are around 50m riders, thousands of skate parks worldwide , and skating has been officially recognised as an Olympic sport. From the testosterone-fuelled features of. . .

Is the FBI Profiling Students to Interview Without Parental Consent?
Merula Furtado | truthout.org | 2018-06-05
Without parental notice or consent, FBI agents recently questioned students from Plano West Senior High School, Texas, about their former classmate, 17-year-old Matin Azizi-Yarand. The students interviewed overwhelmingly identified as Muslim. Several of them had no real relationship with Azizi-Yarand, beyond a shared religion and attendance of a high school with more than 2,000 students. | Azizi-Yarand was arrested at the same school weeks earlier and charged with two counts of criminal solicitation to capital murder and making terrorist threats. A high school junior, he had converted to Islam in the summer of 2017, and according to reports, befriended three FBI operatives online at the end of that year. | During the five months that followed, in his conversations with the informants and undercover agents, Azizi-Yarand reportedly made horrific statements, including expressing an intent to shoot civilians at a local mall.

Grave Warnings Issued as Trump Considers Major Escalation of US Military Role in Yemen
Jake Johnson | mintpressnews.com | 2018-06-05
In a " horrifying" development that international aid groups and independent critics warn could worsen what is already the world's most devastating humanitarian crisis, the Trump administration is reportedly considering a plan to greatly expand the U.S. military's role in Yemen in an effort to help Saudi-backed forces seize the country's main humanitarian aid port. | According to the Wall Street Journal–which first reported the details of the plan on Sunday–the Trump White House "is weighing an appeal from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for direct U.S. support" for Saudi-forces that are closing in on the port city of Hodeidah, where nearly 80 percent of all humanitarian aid and food arrives. White Politicians Have Been Coercing African-Americans to Vote Since Before the Civil Rights Era
The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-06-05
It is impossible to describe the US as having been a full democracy for any more than five decades. | During a recent campaign rally in Tennessee, Donald Trump claimed that most African-Americans have been voting for the Democratic Party for over a century. He told supporters, "African-Americans vote for Democrats, for the most part. Vast majority. They've been doing it for over a hundred years. "A number of commentators have pointed out that Trump's comment is historically inaccurate because most African-Americans in the south could not vote until the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965. Additionally, many African-Americans who could vote before the 1960s — located mostly in the north — were supporters of the Republican Party, the party of Lincoln and emancipation. This was especially true before Franklin Roosevelt introduced the New Deal during the Great Depression,. . .

Staying the Course: the Long March of Middle East Destruction
Jason Hirthler | counterpunch.org | 2018-06-05
The gist of the story should be plain. The United States government is an imperial capitalist juggernaut that is pursuing a singular policy of global domination regardless of which half of the duopoly inhabits the White House (built by black slaves in 1792). There's a checklist in the Oval Office consisting of the seven countries Wesley Clark named, with Russia and North Korea having been penciled in as late additions. Each president crosses one or two off the list and leaves the rest to his successor. Trump will likely attempt to wreck Iran and possibly North Korea.

Going "Full Dictator"? Trump Claims He Has Right to End Mueller Investigation or Pardon Himself
candice | truthout.org | 2018-06-05
As President Trump celebrated his 500th day in office Monday, many legal experts warned that the country could soon face a constitutional crisis as the president continues to attack special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. On Monday, Trump tweeted, "The appointment of the Special Counsel is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL!" He also tweeted, "As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself." Blue Wave or Flameout: How Will Tuesday's Packed Primaries Will Shape the Crucial 2018 Midterms?
Matthew Rozsa, Salon | alternet.org | 2018-06-05
While the main focus is on California's chaotic races, other big contests will come into sharper focus this week | As the eyes of America turn once again toward the 2018 midterm elections, most of the political world's attention on Tuesday will be focused on the messy congressional primaries in California, where Democrats hope to win as many as seven new House seats. But several other states are holding primaries this week as well. In Mississippi, for instance, two Republican-held Senate seats are up for election at the same time — an unusual occurrence brought about by the recent retirement of Sen. Thad Cochran. His appointed replacement, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, faces a right-wing GOP primary challenge from state Sen. Chris McDaniel, a onetime Tea Party darling whose star seems to have faded. But despite overweening Democratic optimism, whichever one of them wins the. . .

Yes, Michael Cohen, Spousal Rape is a Real Thing — as Your Client Ought to Know
JoAnne Sweeny, Salon | alternet.org | 2018-06-05
Michael Cohen is a dreadful lawyer — but maybe his profound ignorance of rape laws has performed a public service | Michael Cohen is not a good lawyer. He has made several mistakes and opened himself to ethical complaints during his representation of President Donald Trump. He doesn't seem to know the law, which is not the best trait for a lawyer to present. Cohen's most recently-discussed factual error is his statement, made in 2015, that spousal rape does not exist. Here's the context: He was threatening a Daily Beast reporter who was writing a story about Ivana Trump's claim that Trump violated her while they were married. This week, an audio recording was released that brought that story back into the news. Let's forget the detailed aggressive threats that Cohen made to the reporter — those are nicely laid out. . .

G7 Summit Appears Doomed to Fail Before It Even Starts
Peter Korzun | mintpressnews.com | 2018-06-05
Those who are unfriendly toward Russia keep on spreading the myth that Moscow is isolated on the world stage. The reality is quite different, but the idea of Russia as an outcast who has been expelled from the international community is something they badly want to be true. The fact that Russia is not a member of the G7 is usually used as an example to prove this point. The group's 2018 summit is to take place in Charlevoix, Quebec, June 8-9. The attendees are supposed to be a united group of key global players who are coordinating their efforts to lead the world in the right direction. And now, what has happened just before this annual event? | May 31 will go down in history as the day the US declared war on its key allies, hitting the…

Minority Lawyers Face Crushing Debt As They Fight Trump Administration Policies
Erin L. Thompson, TomDispatch | alternet.org | 2018-06-05
They're taking an enormous gamble in a rigged game. | Law school applications are up this year in what some are calling a " Trump Bump," since around a third of applicants were inspired to apply by Trump's election. Nearly half of them identify themselves as members of a minority group. They've seen lawyers fighting Trump administration policies that discriminate against their communities and want to do the same. If these minority applicants succeed, they could change the balance of power in American society. If they fail, they will find themselves crushed under a lifetime of debt. But few are aware that they are taking this enormous gamble in a rigged game. On average, minority students end up in lower-ranked law schools, which they pay more to attend than white students, resulting in higher debt burdens. Minority law graduates have lower. . .

Aid Groups Issue Grave Warnings as Trump Considers Major Escalation of US Military Role in Yemen

In a " horrifying" development that international aid groups and independent critics warn could worsen what is already the world's most devastating humanitarian crisis, the Trump administration is reportedly considering a plan to greatly expand the US military's role in Yemen in an effort to help Saudi-backed forces seize the country's main humanitarian aid port. | According to the Wall Street Journal–which first reported the details of the plan on Sunday–the Trump White House "is weighing an appeal from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for direct US support" for Saudi-forces that are closing in on the port city of Hodeidah, where nearly 80 percent of all humanitarian aid and food arrives. 'Propaganda': Eagles Star Slams Fox News for Passing-Off Photo of Him Praying in Segment About Players Kneeling

Ballot Measures in Southern States Would Further Restrict Abortion Rights
Samantha Borek | truthout.org | 2018-06-05
In a widely watched referendum held on May 25, the citizens of Ireland voted by a 2-to-1 margin to repeal an amendment to their constitution that effectively outlawed abortion. That country's abortion laws are currently among the most restrictive in Europe, with Irish women forced to travel abroad to obtain an abortion or to resort to clandestine and potentially dangerous procedures. Research has shown that laws restricting abortions don't lower rates but make them less safe. | But while Ireland is joining most of Europe in making abortion legal, at least in the early stages of pregnancy, the United States — and the Southern states in particular — are moving in the other direction. And this November, voters in two Southern states, Alabama and West Virginia, will weigh in on ballot measures that would add anti-abortion provisions to their…

Only 1-in-4 Women Who Have Been Sexually Harassed Tell Their Employers — Here's Why They're Afraid

Massive Truckers' Strike Exposes Political Chaos as Brazil Gears Up for Elections in October
Leandro Demori | theintercept.com | 2018-06-05
It's rush hour in Brazil's largest cities. But the traffic, which is nearly always chaotic, is flowing smoothly. It's as if the inhabitants have fled some lethal epidemic: The main universities are closed; basic items like eggs and tomatoes can't be found in grocery stores; and nearly half of the city buses sit idle in their garages. Worse yet, most of the gas stations in the country have no fuel to sell — the shortage prompts the closing of 10 major airports. In a country that exports more beef than any other, only two of the 109 meat-packing plants with export licenses are operating. | On May 21, a Monday, disorder seized Brazil, owing to a work stoppage by the country's truckers, who were protesting the high price of diesel fuel. In Narrow Ruling, Supreme Court Sides with Baker Who Refused Cake to Same-Sex Couple
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-06-05
The Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple, citing his religious opposition. In a narrow 7-2 decision, the justices faulted the Colorado Civil Rights Commission's handling of the claims brought against baker Jack Phillips, saying the commission had shown a hostility to religion. Though the case pitted claims of religious freedom against the fight for gay rights, the ruling stopped short of setting a major precedent on whether businesses can deny people services because of their sexual orientation. Colombia: Mend Transitional Justice Law

Trump Cancels Philadelphia Eagles' WH Visit Amid Feud with Players over Racial Justice Protests
Democracy Now! | democracynow.org | 2018-06-05
On Monday evening, Donald Trump abruptly called off today's planned visit by the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles, after it became clear that most of the team had opted out of the event. In a statement announcing the decision, Trump said, "The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow. They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country." But not a single Eagles player kneeled during the national anthem in the 2017 season. Several members of the Philadelphia Eagles announced in February that they wouldn't visit the White House for the traditional Super Bowl victory celebration, as a protest against President Trump. Among them are Malcolm Jenkins, Torrey Smith and Chris Long. For more, we speak with Will Bunch, longtime columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News.
