Palestine and the World Community: What's Next?
Robert Fantina | counterpunch.org | 2018-06-01
It is just two weeks since U.S. President Donald Trump defied nearly the entire international community, and his own military advisors, and moved the U.S. embassy in Apartheid Israel to Jerusalem. Israel celebrated this event by killing 60 unarmed, peaceful Palestinians who were participating in a demonstration to demand their internationally-guaranteed right of return. These…

People With Severe Mental Illness Die 15 to 30 Years Before Other Americans
Ilana Novick | truthdig.com | 2018-06-01
There's a hidden factor increasing American mortality rates, one that goes beyond race, ethnicity, location or even socio-economic class. It's the presence of serious mental illness, Dhruv Khullar reports in The New York Times' TheUpshot blog, and it's killing more Americans than we think. | It's a widening gap, and one, Khullar writes, "That has been growing, but it receives considerably less academic study or public attention." | He continues, "The extraordinary life expectancy gains of the past half-century have left these patients behind, with the result that Americans with serious mental illness live shorter lives than those in many of the world's poorest countries." | Khullar also challenges claims that those with mental illness more frequently die by their own hand. In fact, he writes,…

Paul Krugman Explains Why Trump's 'Stupid Trade War' Is Such a Terrible Idea
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-31
"So this is a remarkably stupid economic conflict to get into. " | As the United States gears up for a full-on trade war with key allies, economist Paul Krugman has a stark warning for Presiden Donald Trump: It's not going to go well. In a column posted Thursday evening, Krugman argues that Trump's trade war — which he once said should be "easy to win" — will be bad for many Americans, including many that see the president as their defenders. "So, the trade war is on," Krugman begins. "And what a stupid trade war it is. ""[T]it-for-tat trade retaliation will hurt a lot of American workers (and especially farmers), quite a few of whom voted for Trump and will now find themselves feeling betrayed," he notes. He also argues that Trump's view of international trade is overly simplistic. Slapping tariffs on a few industries. . .

Meet the Economist Behind the One Percent's Stealth Takeover of America
Lynn Parramore, Institute for New Economic Thinking | alternet.org | 2018-05-31
Nobel laureate James Buchanan is the intellectual linchpin of the Koch-funded attack on democratic institutions. | Ask people to name the key minds that have shaped America's burst of radical right-wing attacks on working conditions, consumer rights and public services, and they will typically mention figures like free market-champion Milton Friedman, libertarian guru Ayn Rand, and laissez-faire economists Friedrich Hayek and Ludwig von Mises. James McGill Buchanan is a name you will rarely hear unless you've taken several classes in economics. And if the Tennessee-born Nobel laureate were alive today, it would suit him just fine that most well-informed journalists, liberal politicians, and even many economics students have little understanding of his work. The reason? Duke historian Nancy MacLean contends that his philosophy is so stark that even young libertarian acolytes are only introduced to it after they have accepted the relatively sunny perspective. . .

BUSTED: Utah Man Who Castigated Spanish-Speaking Family and Took All Their Money Loses His Job

Watch Wyatt Pack's recorded tirade. | A Utah mechanic has been fired after a video surfaced of him berating a Latino family and taking their money over a car issue over Memorial Day weekend. Salt Lake City's KTVX reported that Wyatt Pack — a mechanic from Weber County, UT — is the man captured in the now-viral video showing a tirade against Jose Caballero during a Memorial Day weekend camping trip. In the expletive-laden video, Pack is heard telling Caballero to "f*cking move it" and insulting his intelligence after the Latino man calmly explained that he could not move his truck due to a power steering issue. "I'm a f*cking diesel mechanic for Weber County," the 20-year-old said, "and I know you're f*cking stupid. "Soon after, he offers to tow the Caballero family's truck — but charges them for it. John Boehner Says GOP is 'Taking a Nap Somewhere' While Trump Takes Over: 'There is No Republican Party'

John Boehner sent out a fundraising email for that same Reublican party just three days ago, Publici's Dave Levinthal reports. | Sipping what "appeared" to be a Bloody Mary onstage at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Thursday, former Speaker of the House John Boehner said Donald Trump has taken over the Republican party–as his former colleagues are "kinda taking a nap somewhere. "Boehner, who sent out a fundraising for the nonexistent Republican party just three days ago, was speaking with Local 4's Devin Scillian at an annual political event in Mackinac Island, Michigan. The former House speaker also offered his perspective on marijuana legalization, telling Scillian "over the next five or ten years, [it] will be available all over the country. "In April, Boehner joined the advisory board of Acreage Holdings, which Bloomberg reports "cultivates, processes and dispenses cannabis in 11 U. S. states. Roger Stone Says Trump's Most Recent Pardon Was a Clear 'Signal' to His Associates–And to Robert Mueller
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-31
"The special counsel has awesome powers, as you know, but the president has even more awesome powers. " | From the moment President Donald Trump announced his pardon Thursday of conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza, observers began pointing out that the move looked like an attempt to signal to his associates that he's willing to use the pardon power as a weapon against special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential Russian collusion with the Trump campaign. While those claims remained largely in the realm of speculation at first, by Thursday night one Trump ally, Roger Stone, told the Washington Post that he had received the message that loud and clear: "It has to be a signal to Mike Flynn and Paul Manafort and even Robert S. Mueller III: Indict people for crimes that don't pertain to Russian collusion and this is what could happen," Stone. . .

Internet Rips Trump for Pardoning 'Vile, AntiSemitic' Political Ally One Day After Meeting on Prison Reform
Elizabeth Preza, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-31
Former Justice Department Spokesperson Matt Miller called the move a "naked abuse of the pardon power. " | One day after meeting with Kim Kardashian West to discuss prison reform, Donald Trump on Thursday used his presidential pardon powers to right a perceived wrong in the U. S. criminal justice system. Unfortunately, that "perceived wrong" did not pertain to Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old great-grandmother currently serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug crime and the reported subject of West's meeting with the president. Instead, it related to Dinesh D'Souza, a conservative political ally of Trump, who was convicted of a campaign finance violation in 2014. Trump's decision to pardon D'Souza was viewed largely as a signal to longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen, who currently faces an investigation into possible campaign finance violations, among other crimes. Trump Told Jeff Sessions He'd Be a 'Hero' if He Took over the Russia Probe and Went After Hillary Clinton: Report
Cody Fenwick, AlterNet | alternet.org | 2018-05-31
A new report from Axios shows Trump's behavior is even more troubling than we knew. | President Donald Trump's efforts to convince Attorney General Jeff Sessions to withdraw his recusal from the Russia investigation and other campaign-related investigations were much deeper and extensive than has previously been revealed, according to a new report from Axios. The New York Times reported Tuesday that Trump had pressed Sessions in March 2017 to withdraw his recusal and regain control of the Russia investigation — but Axios reports that this instance was one of at least four in which Trump pushed his attorney general to reinsert himself into the Justice Departments involvement in election-related matters. Trump reportedly told Sessions he would be a "hero" for conservatives if he took control of the Russia probe and began an investigation of Hillary Clinton. However, Sessions has consulted in-house Justice. . .
