Here's How Saudi Arabia Took Donald Trump for a Ride
Ben Freeman, William D. Hartung, Tom Dispatch | alternet.org | 2018-05-10
"Think of the Saudi-Trump relationship as the love affair from hell. " | It's another Trump affair — this time without the allegations of sexual harassment (and worse), the charges and counter-charges, the lawsuits, and all the rest. So it hasn't gotten the sort of headlines that Stormy Daniels has garnered, but when it comes to influence, American foreign policy, and issues of peace and war, it couldn't matter more or be a bigger story (or have more money or lobbyists involved in it). Think of it as the great love affair of the age of Trump, the one between The Donald and the Saudi royals. And if there's any place to start laying out the story, it's naturally at a wedding, in this case in a tragic ceremony that happened to take place in Yemen, not Washington. Trump is the New Gaddafi
Robert Fisk | counterpunch.org | 2018-05-10
I was trying to think a few hours ago — after his shameful, outrageous, insane breaking of a solemn international treaty — just who Donald Trump reminded me of. I used to think about the boastful, gung-ho racist Theodore Roosevelt, the 'Rough Rider' who enjoyed war (and threats). But Theodore Roosevelt actually did win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Supreme Court to Decide Whether the First Amendment Actually Protects Your Right to Silence
Robert Sedler, The Conversation | alternet.org | 2018-05-10
The American "right to silence" is on trial this year. | New Hampshire's state motto "Live free or die" is, for many residents, a stirring evocation of the independent spirit of colonial America. But not all New Hampshirites agree with this well-known slogan that is emblazoned on the state's license plates. In 1975, George Maynard was sent to jail because he didn't believe in it. Maynard and his wife were Jehovah's Witnesses, a Christian denomination that teaches that true believers will enjoy eternal life. The couple felt that the state's motto violated this tenet. So Maynard covered up the "or die" part on his vehicles' license plates. Police gave him three different tickets for illegally altering the plates. When he refused to pay the fines, which totaled US$75, he was given a 15-day jail sentence. Maynard then filed a lawsuit that reached the U. S.

The Iran Nuclear Deal Isn't Just a Good Idea — It's the Law

On May 8, President Donald Trump announced US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, colloquially known as "the Iran nuclear deal." Trump 'Hates People Making Money Off Him': Ex-Campaign Aide Explains Cohen's Risky Role

Sam Nunberg's warning is either very bad for Michael Cohen — or very bad for Trump. | A former campaign aide to President Donald Trump made a provocative comment Thursday afternoon on MSNBC — suggesting that Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen or the president himself may be in substantial legal trouble following recent revelations. "The president hates people making money off of him," Sam Nunberg said in a clip first pointed out by Talking Points Memo. "He hates it. "His comments come in response to a series of stories showing that Cohen received millions of dollars in payments following the 2016 election from major U. Russia Had Ability to Change Voter Data in 2016–This Is Not Reassuring for 2018

Russia had the ability to change voter registration data. | Hey, everyone, good news! Russia had the ability to alter voter registration data in several states in 2016 . . . but they didn't use it! What a relief, right? The Department of Homeland Security has previously publicly acknowledged that Russians scanned systems in 21 states and were able to " penetrate" a handful. But cybersecurity experts say the report Tuesday from the Senate intelligence committee offers new details on what exactly Russian-backed hackers could have done once they got inside election systems. "In at least six states, the Russian-affiliated cyber actors went beyond scanning and conducted malicious access attempts on voting-related websites. In a small number of states, Russian-affiliated cyber actors were able to gain access to restricted elements of election infrastructure," the report says. "In a small. . .

After hearing about the two Sacramento police officers who tragically shot and killed 22-year-old unarmed Black male Stephon Clark because they thought that he had a gun when in fact he had a cell phone, I was seized yet again by that profoundly uncomfortable feeling of trying to make sense of what it means to be a Black male in contemporary white America, an America that has always spelled out in unambiguous and brutal terms that Black bodies are disposable, especially when compared to white bodies, white life. There was that profound sense of grieving yet again for a Black body killed by the state or proxies of the state.

The fact that he's older than she is simply wasn't relevant. As we now know, Trump felt the need to dictate his own medical report, since he wasn't sure enough of his own good health to undergo a real physical. John Bolton Wants America to Surrender in Cyberwar–He Prefers We Stick to Blowing Things Up
Mark Sumner, Daily Kos | alternet.org | 2018-05-10
Our new national security adviser doesn't understand the modern era. | Politico reports that the Trump White House is considering eliminating the top cybersecurity position within the administration. The push to drop cyber from the list of top concerns comes from new National Security Advisor John Bolton, who apparently views cyber warfare as considerably less threatening than the kind he prefers to encourage. Instead, the position may simply be absorbed as another function of one of Bolton's assistants, moving cyber security concerns several notches down in importance. Bolton is apparently all in favor of this idea, even though earlier this week the Senate Intelligence Committee found that Russia had conducted an "unprecedented, coordinated cyber campaign" against the nation's voting infrastructure. There is a general consensus that the U.S. economy is close to full employment, given that one of the most commonly used measures (based on nonfarm payroll data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics) indicates an unemployment rate that has fallen to 3.9 percent. As good as that figure appears to be, it is troubling that wage growth for the majority of Americans remains tepid, hardly what an observer would expect if the labor markets were as tight as implied by that number. And in fact, if one digs into the data a bit more closely, it does bring to mind the old expression commonly attributed to Mark Twain about "lies, damned lies, and statistics." | A longstanding problem relating to our economic measurements such as employment is that U.S. policymakers see much of the employment data at the same time that…

Trump's Moves on Iran Are From the Iraq War Playbook

And, of course, a lot of people who did live through it have forgotten its details or how complicit corporate media were in amplifying the campaign. That is, the charge against social media today that it reinforces extremism by its algorithms could be equally well laid against elements of the U.S. press throughout history. California's Teacher Pension System Targets Gun Sellers
Staff | truthdig.com | 2018-05-10
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif.–One of the largest public pension funds in the nation voted Wednesday to use its financial might to pressure gun retailers across the country to stop selling military-style assault weapons and accessories like rapid-fire "bump stocks" used at the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. | The $222.5 billion California State Teachers' Retirement System said it will try to unseat board members at companies that resist and could dump its stock in those retailers if they still refuse to conform to laws already in effect in California. | The fund plans an accompanying publicity drive to leverage the student-led nationwide push following the February massacre at a Florida high school. Fund officials also are lobbying other pension funds and investors to join their drive. The system funds pensions for more than 900,000 public school educators and their families. | Aside from outlawing…

The US Plan to Target China

Trump Is Using Parkland Victims in Speeches–Majority of Families Say He Hasn't Bothered to Call Them
Hunter, Daily Kos | alternet.org | 2018-05-10
The president doesn't actually show care for victims' families. | After Donald Trump invoked the mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school during last week's speech to the nation's largest domestic terrorism lobby (aka the National Rifle Association), BuzzFeed sought out some of the families who lost loved ones in that shooting to ask whether they had, to this day, ever been contacted by Trump. The answer is no–most haven't. BuzzFeed News spoke to nine families of Parkland victims. Of them, eight have not heard from the president since the shooting nearly three months ago. One told BuzzFeed News they have heard from and met with Trump. The other eight families of victims declined to comment or didn't respond. Is the U.S. Meddling in Nicaragua?
Edward Hunt | counterpunch.org | 2018-05-10
For the past decade, the United States has been quietly assisting opposition groups in Nicaragua, helping them organize resistance to the country's popular leftist president Daniel Ortega. | U.S. officials hope the country's opposition groups will create a new political movement that can defeat Ortega at the polls or pressure him into stepping down from power. They fear that without their support, Ortega's opposition will remain weak and divided, making it impossible for anyone to mount a successful political campaign against the Nicaraguan president.

As Medical Aid Dwindles, Some Syrian Refugees May Be "Too Expensive" to Keep Alive
Sarah Aziza | theintercept.com | 2018-05-10
Abd Rahman al-Jedan's life bears little resemblance to most 20-year-olds. As a young boy in Homs, Syria, he grew slowly and was often ill; by adolescence, he'd begun to lose his eyesight. In 2013, at age 16, he was diagnosed with kidney disease caused by uncontrolled diabetes. As the war in Syria intensified, al-Jedan's kidneys continued to fail, and before his 18th birthday, he'd gone blind. His doctors informed his family that al-Jedan's kidney's had given out completely. From now on, the young man would require dialysis to survive. He began spending three days a week at the hospital, using the days in between to recover. "It is painful, and it makes me very tired," he said of the procedure, "but that is how I stay alive now." | Soon after beginning his aggressive treatment, al-Jedan's father was killed by a mortar blast,…

Could Ida B. Wells Have Exposed Lynching on Your Newsfeed?

If Ida B. Wells had depended on Facebook, would we ever have had a National Lynching Memorial? | Two stories collided in my head this week. One of which was the opening of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama–this country's first major effort to confront the vast scope of the racial-terror lynchings that ravaged the black community under a pervasive, prevailing culture of white supremacy.
