Democrats Love Trump's Wars, Too
Adam H. Johnson | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-04-17
American politicians on both sides of the aisle love war. On Monday, an In These Times survey found that 92 percent of U.S. Democratic and Independent senators did not mount meaningful opposition to Donald Trump's April 13 air strikes against the Syrian government. The primary point of contention that Democrats–and most of the partisan Democratic media–leveled were vague legal or constitutional meta-objections that Trump did not have the "authority" or should consult Congress. But the bulk of the "resistance" did not raise meaningful objections to the strikes themselves. | Only a handful of Democrats–Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., Christopher Murphy, D-Conn., Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.–opposed the air strikes on substance. The vast majority, instead, relied on process demands that Trump get congressional approval–without saying if the strikes themselves were good or bad. | Process critiques over legality are useful as…

Michael Cohen Alone Cannot Stop Donald Trump
Eugene Robinson | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-04-17
Keep calm and raise hell. The forces of truth and justice may be closing in on President Trump, but there is no reason to believe they can triumph without massive displays of outrage in the streets and at the polls. | Potentially the most serious threat Trump has ever faced came last week when FBI agents raided the office, home and hotel room of his longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen. By all accounts, Cohen's role for the president and the Trump Organization has been that of a "fixer" who brings in deals and makes problems go away. | As everyone knows by now, Cohen "facilitated" payment of $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about the sexual tryst she says she had with Trump. And according to a lawsuit filed by former Playboy model Karen McDougal, Cohen was involved behind…

What's Really in McDonald's Happy Meals? Here's the Awful Truth
David Coman-Hidy, Independent Media Institute | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-17
The fast-food chain is misleading the public by claiming to care about the millions of animals killed for its menu. | "We have a responsibility to care for the millions of animals in our supply chain. . . We understand and acknowledge the significant responsibility we have to help ensure these animals experience good welfare throughout their lives. "These are the statements that head the Animal Health and Welfare section of the McDonald's website. Let's imagine that you are a chicken born onto a farm that supplies McDonald's. During the course of your short, miserable life, your baby body will grow to mammoth proportions. If you're unlucky enough to survive the first weeks (about 4. 4% of birds will not), your weak legs, likely deformed skeleton, and underdeveloped internal organs will all strain from the pounds of meat you were born to grow. Thousands of Iraqi women and children with perceived IS ties have been condemned for crimes they did not commit. They are being punished for factors outside of their control — such as being related, however distantly, to men who were somehow involved with IS. California Pauses Trump's Border Wall Plan by Refusing to Send Any State Troops to Assist

Troops would have been a useful resource to perform work such as operating remotely-controlled surveillance cameras, documenting suspicious activity, repairing vehicles, and a host of administrative tasks. Despite his initial eagerness, California Gov. Jerry Brown pulled back on his support, and said he would not send California troops to work alongside immigration enforcement. War is Just F**kin' Wrong

There is no such thing as a good war, especially not in 2018. History, both recent and otherwise, has proven this statement. No war in the past seventy years has made the world a better place. In fact, in most cases those wars have made the world more dangerous. Furthermore, these wars–most of them waged by the United States and its clients–have wreaked environmental destruction, made life even more difficult for those who have little to begin with, and created an economy whose very existence not only demands but depends on the waging of and preparation for war and more war. In other words, a permanent war economy.

Watch Conservative Charlie Sykes Eviscerate 'Post-Ethical' Fox News Following Hannity and Cohen Revelations
Noor Al-Sibai, Raw Story | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-16
"Are there any standards any longer? " | Never-Trump conservative commentator Charlie Sykes on Monday blasted Fox News and their host Sean Hannity for failing to disclose to viewers that he was represented by the president's longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen. "Lordy, I hope there are tapes! " Sykes joked to MSNBC host Ali Velshi, echoing fired FBI Director James Comey's off-the-cuff remark during his 2017 Senate hearing about his conversations with President Donald Trump. "Look, Sean Hannity had no legal obligation to disclose his relationship with Michael Cohen," the conservative radio host acknowledged, "but if there is anything remaining of journalistic ethics at Fox News, he certainly needed to disclose that fact when he was going on and on and on talking about Michael Cohen, the [FBI] raid on Michael Cohen and this entire, you know, legal proceeding here. ""Are there any standards any longer? " Sykes mused. "We've talked a lot about being in a post-factual political world. You kind of wonder whether over there [at Fox News] you are in a post-ethical political world as well. "Watch below, via MSNBC:. . .

Travis Gettys, Raw Story | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-16
She was booked into jail and released on bond. | A white Georgia woman hurled racist and homophobic slurs at two black soldiers — and then physically attacked them for recording video of her outburst. The two uniformed women apparently angered the woman and her son outside a Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen restaurant Saturday night in Macon because they drove around her family as they attempted to park. "This Gentleman & his mom [were] hostile about the two soldiers not waiting for them to reverse back into [their] handicap parking spot for her handicapped husband instead they went around and proceeded to park in [their] own separate parking spot," wrote witness LaKeycia Ward. The woman, later identified as Judy Tucker, and her son Robbie followed the two women into the restaurant and called them "black b*tches" and said they didn't know the U. S. Army. . .
