Iran: Jailed Rights Defender Ailing
Human Rights Watch | Human Rights Watch News | 2018-04-10
Golrakh Iraee | © 2014 Private | (Beirut) — Iranian authorities should immediately release Golrokh Iraee, a human rights defender hospitalized in Tehran, Human Rights Watch said today. Iraee was sentenced to six years in prison in April 2015 on charges solely related to her peaceful activism, after an unfair trial. | Iraee was transferred to a hospital from prison on April 3, apparently suffering medical complications from a hunger strike. The authorities allowed her family to visit on April 9. | "Iranian authorities are apparently so threatened by human rights defenders that they imprison them for years," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. "Instead of making prison conditions worse, Iran should start listening to defenders' demands for more rights and freedom for all citizens." | On January…

Denver Post Revolts Against Its "Vulture" Hedge-Fund Owner & Demands 126-Year-Old Newspaper Be Saved
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-10
The Denver Post has launched a revolt against its owner: New York-based hedge fund Alden Global Capital. On Sunday, The Denver Post's editorial board published a lead editorial headlined "As vultures circle, The Denver Post must be saved." Alden Global Capital is the parent company of Digital First Media, one of the country's largest newspaper chains. Since 2010, Digital First Media has slashed budgets and staff at newspapers across the country, including the Oakland Tribune, The San Jose Mercury News and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Alden Global Capital is backed by founder and chief of investments Randall Smith and president Heath Freeman. Both are known on Wall Street as vulture capitalists who make their money investing in distressed businesses and selling them off. For more, we speak with Ricardo Baca, the former cannabis editor at The Denver Post, who wrote one of the op-eds, titled "When a hedge fund tries to kill the newspapers it owns, journalists must fight back." Baca worked at the Post for 16 years and is now the CEO and founder of Grasslands.

Trump Slams FBI & AG Jeff Sessions After Agents Raid Home & Office of His Attorney, Michael Cohen
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-10
FBI agents have raided the home, office and Park Avenue hotel room of President Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen. During the Monday morning raid, the FBI seized a slew of business records, emails and documents. The Washington Post reports Cohen is under investigation for bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations. Agents also reportedly seized documents related to a $130,000 payment Cohen made to adult film star Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels. Cohen has admitted to personally paying Clifford to keep her quiet about an alleged 2007 affair she had with Donald Trump. The payment, only days before the 2016 election, may violate federal election law. The raid was carried out by the U.S. attorney of New York, Geoffrey Berman, who was handpicked by President Trump after Trump fired Preet Bharara. Berman is a former law partner of New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Monday's raid came after a referral by special counsel Robert Mueller. President Trump reacted angrily to news of the raid Monday. For more, we speak with Marcy Wheeler, an investigative journalist who runs the website EmptyWheel.net.

"A Very Dangerous Moment": Trump Threatens to Strike Syria as Warmonger John Bolton Joins Cabinet
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-10
President Trump has threatened a forceful response to this weekend's alleged chemical gas attack in Syria that killed at least 40 people and injured as many 1,000 in the rebel-held town of Douma. During a meeting with military officials Monday, Trump vowed to take action. Washington and its chief allies at the United Nations have blamed the Assad government for the chemical attack, but Russia claims there is no evidence an attack even took place. Meanwhile, Iran has acknowledged seven Iranians died in an Israeli airstrike on a Syrian base early on Monday. Mali: Deaths, Torture in Army Detention
Human Rights Watch | Human Rights Watch News | 2018-04-09
| The government of Mali should urgently conduct credible investigations into abuses against suspects its army detained during a major military operation against armed Islamist groups, Human Rights Watch said. The army high command should suspend officers implicated in abuse pending investigations and ensure that all detainees are treated humanely and are promptly turned over to government gendarmes. | The investigations should include the deaths in detention of 27 men and the severe torture of two others in February, March, and April 2018 during Operation Dambe, a major offensive that ramped up in early 2018 in the Mopti region of Central Mali. The army has said that it is investigating two of the reported cases. In light of the failure of the military to hold accountable soldiers implicated in past abuses, an independent Justice Ministry investigation for the…

Glenn Greenwald: Brazil's Right Wing Jailed Ex-President Lula Because They Couldn't Win at the Polls
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-09
In Brazil, former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has begun serving a 12-year sentence for a controversial corruption conviction. After missing a 5 p.m. Friday deadline, Lula turned himself in to police on Saturday following a standoff during which he spent the night in Sà£o Paulo's steelworkers' union building. Lula's supporters gathered outside, many hoping he would defy orders to surrender. On Saturday, Lula addressed thousands of his supporters and members of his Workers' Party. Last week, the Supreme Court rejected Lula's bid to stay out of jail while he appealed his conviction, effectively removing him from Brazil's presidential election later this year, where he was the front-runner. Lula is a former union leader who served as president of Brazil from 2003 to 2010. During that time, he helped lift tens of millions of Brazilians out of poverty. His supporters say…

Donald Trump Asks Why CIA Did Not Massacre Family of Militant With Drone
Juan Cole | MintPress News | 2018-04-09

Hospitals Are Leaving Rural America. Rural Americans Are Staying Put

During those years, she worked as a carpenter near her hometown in rural Vermont, earning just enough that she didn't qualify for low-income health care, but not enough to afford health insurance on her own. While uninsured, she suffered two major work injuries that landed her in the emergency room — once, a nail shot through three of her fingers, and another time, a piece of wood kicked back on the table saw and sliced her arm. When she was unable to pay the emergency room costs, her credit took a hit for years. | Today, Colburn works on her brother's farm and is covered by Medicaid. Pope: God Favors 'Saints Next Door' Over Religious Elites
Staff | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-04-09
VATICAN CITY–Pope Francis is calling for ordinary Catholics to live holy lives in whatever they do, stressing that the "saints next door" are more pleasing to God than religious elites who insist on perfect adherence to rules and doctrine. | In a new document released Monday, Francis said defending the poor and migrants is "equally sacred" to defending the unborn — a not-so-veiled critique of the conservative right in the U.S. for whom opposition to abortion trumps the Gospel mandate to love and welcome the stranger. | And he warned that the vitriol that is sometimes spewed online — including by Catholic media — needs to stop since it violates God's commandment not to bear false witness, lie or "ruthlessly vilify others." | The document, "Rejoice and Be Glad," is the third apostolic exhortation of Francis' papacy, after the first two riled conservatives…

The Republican Panic Over the Midterm Elections Is Growing
Laura Clawson, DailyKos | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-09
Expect Mitch McConnell to pull out all the stops this November. | Republicans are doubling down on their efforts to maintain or even increase their Senate majority–not because they think November's elections are looking good for them, but because they're so worried they'll lose the House. "Our donors will often say we need to do everything we can to hold onto the Senate, because there's a chance we may not be able to hold the House," said Steven Law, a former McConnell chief of staff who runs a super PAC called the Senate Leadership Fund. [. . . ]McConnell sounded similar notes Tuesday when he likened the electoral headwinds to a "Category 3, 4 or 5" storm. Republicans need to keep control of the Senate because "even if we were to lose the House and be stymied legislatively, we could still approve appointments,. . .
