US Museum Refuses Hiroshima Exhibit over Abolishing Nuclear Weapons Theme
Russell Contreras | MintPress News | 2018-04-04
A museum in Los Alamos, New Mexico (AP) — a once-secret New Mexico city that developed the atomic bomb — has put an exhibit from Japan on hold because of its theme of abolishing nuclear weapons. | The Los Alamos Historical Museum confirmed Monday that it will not host a traveling exhibit organized by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum until all parties can work out their differences over the theme. | The exhibit, which features articles of clothing, exposed plates, and other personal items from victims, aims to draw attention to the horrors of the bombs that destroyed both cities. | Heather McClenahan, executive director of the Los Alamos Historical Museum, said the museum's board of directors felt uncomfortable about the exhibit's call to abolish nuclear bombs. The Science Can No Longer Be Ignored: Legal Cannabis Access Reduces Opioid Abuse and Mortality
Paul Armentano, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-04
For many patients, cannabis offers a viable alternative to opioids. | On Monday, the esteemed Journal of the American Medical Association, Internal Medicine published a pair of persuasive new studies reinforcing this opinion. In the first study, investigators from the University of Kentucky and Emory University assessed the relationship between medical and adult-use marijuana laws and opioid prescribing patterns among Medicaid enrollees nationwide. Enrollees included all Medicaid fee-for-service and managed care enrollees–a high-risk population for chronic pain, opioid use disorder, and opioid overdose. Researchers reported that the enactment of both medicalization and adult-use laws were both associated with reductions in opioid prescribing rates, with broader legalization policies associated with the greatest rates of decline.

Public Workers Worried That Tennessee's Billionaire Governor Is Taking Another Run at Them
David Dayen | The Intercept | 2018-04-04
Last year, Tennessee's governor attempted a frontal assault on the unionized workers that staff the state's facilities and management jobs at public buildings, two-thirds of which are state-run colleges. Gov. Bill Haslam, the richest U.S. elected official not named Donald Trump, signed a contract with a facilities management firm to privatize those jobs. But a prodigious campaign by the campus employee union and student activists led to nearly the entire University of Tennessee system publicly opting out of the contract. | For a union that is legally prohibited from collective bargaining, going up against a stacked deck of conservative lawmakers and powerful corporations and coming out with a win was a spectacular feat. But Haslam appears to have found a work-around. | The Tennessee legislature is on the verge of passing a bill to overhaul the University of…

Despite Overwhelming Opposition From Residents, Michigan Permits Nestlé to Draw More Groundwater for Bottling
Lorraine Chow, EcoWatch | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-04
Out of 81,862 comments filed, only 75 were reportedly in favor of granting the permit. | The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has granted Nestlé Waters a permit to increase groundwater withdrawal from 250 gallons per minute to 400 gallons per minute from its White Pine Springs well for the purpose of bottling drinking water. The approval comes despite near universal opposition from residents, who cite the Swiss food and beverage giant's nominal $200-a-year fee to pump water from its wells. The fee will not change with the new permit. Additionally, Nestlé's White Pine Springs well near Evart, Michigan happens to lie approximately 120 miles from the lead-poisoned city of Flint. Bottled water companies have drawn outrage from many communities for privatizing their public water supply in the face of Flint's years-long

The Coming Crisis with Iran.
Mel Gurtov | counterpunch.org | 2018-04-04
With the appointments of Mike Pompeo as secretary of state and John Bolton as national security adviser, Donald Trump has signaled his preparedness by the May 12deadline to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and ramp up pressure on North Korea if it refuses to denuclearize. The two moves would have interactive consequences: casting aside the Iran nuclear deal is likely to be read in Pyongyang as indicating that the US cannot be trusted to keep its commitments. It might also be read as a signal that should nuclear talks with Trump fail, a US attack on North Korea's missile and nuclear sites could be in the offing.

Trump's Angry Tweets Confuse Caravan Migrants
Staff | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-04-04
MATIAS ROMERO, Mexico — President Donald Trump's angry comments about a caravan of migrants ricochet around like a soccer ball in the dusty athletic complex in southern Mexico where the 1,000 or so Central Americans have camped since the weekend. | Trump's words have confused and befuddled families here, some of whom never intended on going all the way to the United States after the end of the "Stations of the Cross" caravan. It is a symbolic event held around Easter each year to raise awareness about the plight of migrants and has never left southern Mexico, though some participants then continue north on their own. | Even coordinators of the caravan seemed to misunderstand the debate in the U.S. when Trump's endorsed a "nuclear option" for pushing funding for his border wall through Congress. They told worried families Tuesday that the U.S.

Teachers in Revolt: Meet the Educators in Kentucky & Oklahoma Walking Out over School Funding
Democracy Now! | 2018-04-04
Schools across Oklahoma are closed today for a third day as teachers continue their strike demanding more funding for education and increased pay. Oklahoma's public education budget has been slashed more than any other state since the start of the recession in 2008, and its teachers are among the lowest paid in the nation. Scores of teachers are planning to begin a 123-mile protest march today from Tulsa to Oklahoma City. Meanwhile, thousands of teachers continue to protest in Kentucky, demanding a reversal to a provision in a recently passed bill about sewage treatment that gutted their pension benefits. On Monday, every school in the state was closed either due to spring break or in anticipation of a massive rally in the capital of Frankfort, where teachers filled the rotunda of the Kentucky state Capitol, chanting "Fund our schools!" This year's wave of teacher rebellions began in West Virginia, where teachers won a 5 percent pay raise after a historic strike. We speak to four guests: Oklahoma teacher Andrea Thomas, Kentucky state lawmaker Attica Scott, retired Kentucky teacher Mickey McCoy and labor journalist Mike Elk.

Is Robert Mueller Compiling a Case Against Trump for Obstruction of Justice?
Jake Johnson, Common Dreams | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-04
The special counsel is reportedly seeking an interview with the president. | With President Donald Trump's legal team " in shambles" following resignations and amid an ongoing struggle to find replacements, the Washington Post reported late Tuesday that special counsel Robert Mueller has informed Trump's lawyers that he is compiling a report on the president's actions during his time in office, including possible obstruction of justice. Citing anonymous officials familiar with the ongoing probe into possible collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and the Russian government, the Post noted that Mueller informed the president's attorneys of the report last month and "reiterated the need to interview Trump–both to understand whether he had any corrupt intent to thwart the Russia investigation and to complete this portion of his probe. Confessions of a Former Sinclair News Director
Aaron Weiss, The Huffington Post | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-04
I realized I would have trouble looking myself in the mirror if I put stories like that on the air. | I was a Sinclair news director. For a few months, at least. In 2013, I was a young news director at a struggling small station in the Midwest, having worked my way up the ranks as a producer in larger markets. I'd uprooted my family the year before and moved from the West Coast to "earn my stripes" running a newsroom. I had a small team with a handful of veterans and eager new reporters I enjoyed mentoring. That fall, Sinclair Broadcast Group bought the station. Sinclair was not a household name at the time, but it did have a reputation in the business for being heavy-handed in station operations and for having a conservative editorial lean. The company first made national headlines. . .

Each move came amid reports that he was acting on instinct. This is a matter of no little significance. A lot is riding on his gut — nothing less than the possibility of war. Both of his new hires are said to be hawks eager for war with both Iran and North Korea. As a headline in Slate announced: "It's Time to Panic. "But it gets worse. Almost certainly when Trump hails his gut he has in mind something else besides experience. And that's his animal instincts. Saudi Coalition Targets Yemen Refugee Camp Killing 7 Children
Randi Nord | MintPress News | 2018-04-04
Warplanes belonging to the U.S.-Saudi coalition carried out a series of airstrikes on a camp for displaced people in Yemen's Hodeidah province on Monday. Out of the 14 fatalities, seven of which were children — some appear to be infants. The crime also killed three women and injured an additional nine civilians. Rescuers struggled to retrieve scattered bodies from the rubble for hours after the terror attack. | UNICEF called this crime "one of the deadliest attacks on children since the conflict in Yemen escalated in March 2015." Saudi Arabia began their airstrike campaign against Yemen in March of 2015 with full military and intelligence support from the United States and several other countries. This means that not only does the U.S. provide bombs, but Washington also provides logistical support for selecting airstrike targets. | CLICK HERE to see photos…

Lou Dobbs, Trump Whisperer: President's Media Mirror Is Also an Adviser
Heather Digby Parton, Salon | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-04
Veteran Fox Business host was a Trumper before Trump was. Now he reportedly calls into White House meetings. | Anyone who's been observing American politics for any length of time will be familiar with the right-wing charge that the media has a liberal bias that makes it impossible for conservatives to get a fair shake. This has been around for decades, going back to speechwriter William Safire's famous screed against the "nattering nabobs of negativism" (written for Richard Nixon's vice president, Spiro Agnew) and backed up by studies showing that most journalists tend to vote Democratic, while ignoring the fact that most media companies are owned or run by wealthy conservatives. There are library shelves full of books on this subject on both sides of the argument. As should be obvious, this is actually a clever political strategy deployed by cynical GOP operatives.

She has described this as a "gross violation of the law". | In her complaint, the lawyer wrote that one of the interrogators questioned Ahed in an inappropriate way for a female minor, which amounted to sexual harassment. | The same interrogator told Tamimi that he would arrest her relatives and interrogate them if she did not respond to his questioning. | Lasky also said that despite the fact that Tamimi is young, she was interrogated simultaneously by two men without the presence of a woman in the room or even an interrogator specialised in questioning minors.

Former Vice President Joe Biden recorded a robocall for Dallet, and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee spent at least $165,000 on the race. Screnock, meanwhile, had the backing of Gov. Scott Walker and the National Rifle Association, and a notoriously anti-union business lobby had dumped in almost $1 million on ads as of last Friday. Dallet's victory moves the ideological makeup of the Wisconsin Supreme Court from five-to-two. . .

5 Other Financial Gender Gaps We Need to Solve Besides the Pay Gap
Liz Posner, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-04-04
Lower salaries aren't the only factor holding women back from accumulating wealth. | The gender wage gap gets a lot of attention, and for good reason. At the current snail's pace by which it's closing worldwide, the World Economic Forum says it will take about 200 years to close the pay gap. But there are other financial imbalances holding many women back and keeping them from economic independence. Income is certainly important, as it impacts savings directly and can determine day-to-day lifestyles. It helps build wealth, but doesn't necessarily guarantee it. "There is an important distinction between income and wealth inequality," says Rebecca Wiggins, executive director of AFCPE, a nonprofit training finance professionals to understand the gap. "While income levels address short-term needs, wealth accumulation provides mobility and long-term security. " Overall wealth is about financial security, and includes investments, savings,. . .
