Once Upon a Time, Congress Actually Fought Saudi Arms Deals.
Harry Blain | MintPress News | 2018-03-10
That should've happened so fast that Congress couldn't step in. These were the words of Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen at February's prestigious Munich Security Conference, in a panel discussion on whether President Obama should have used military force against the Syrian government in 2013. | The senator's comments succinctly capture the "don't ask us" mantra that the current United States Congress has increasingly followed when faced with questions of war, peace, and America's role in the world — a clear abdication of its duties under Article 1 of the constitution. | But not every Congress has rolled over so easily. | Indeed, in the past Congress has asserted itself in ways that now seem almost unthinkable: denying and opposing presidential requests for arms sales, scrutinizing intelligence agencies, and questioning…

How LSD Makes Music Profoundly Awesome.
Phillip Smith, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-10
Researchers are learning more about how the powerful psychedelic affects the brain. | Listening to Jimi Hendrix on acid back in the day was absolutely mind-melting. The sounds transcended normal tonality–not to mention space-time–and the music itself took on deep, deep meaning. It seemed like he was plugged into the primal energies of the universe, and profound truths flickered like jagged lightning. It wasn't just the music of the master, either–LSD had the uncanny ability to imbue even the most saccharine dreck with cosmic connotations. Any old head who suddenly "got" Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun" in an acid-induced tearful epiphany knows whereof I speak. Now, some new research helps explain why that happens. A recent study in Cerebral Cortex found that LSD changed the perception of music by altering the neural response in certain key brain regions, including those that govern. . .

Trump's Freaky Week: Tough-Guy Tariffs, a Porn Star and a Strange Bromance with North Korea.
Andrew O'Hehir, Salon | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-10
Trickster demon Donald Trump had one hell of a week. | If Donald Trump had been sent to Earth by a malicious deity to expose human hypocrisy in its many forms, like a trickster demon out of the mythological past, I'm not sure he could be doing a better job. Indeed, that might be a more convincing explanation than any others we have available, and it conforms neatly with Neil deGrasse Tyson's 50/50 proposition that our universe is actually a computer simulationdesigned by a superior civilization. This week alone we have seen Trump reintroduce tariffs — a seemingly antique mechanism viewed with dread by both economists and history students — halfway admit to having cheated on his current wife with a porn star, and agree in principle to a summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. None of those things. . .

A Hidden Factor in Police Shootings of Black Americans: Decades of Housing Segregation.
Maha Ahmed | The Intercept | 2018-03-10
Data has shown that, across the country, black Americans are more likely to be killed by police than whites. But the problem is worse in the most segregated states, according to a recent study showing that racial disparities in fatal police shootings are linked to histories of structural violence. | Police killings, more than just the consequence of a few bad-apple officers that can be rooted out of the system, instead can be traced back to the discriminatory housing and economic policies of the mid-20th century, the study's senior author, Michael Siegel, told The Intercept. | To conduct their analysis, Siegel and his colleagues at Boston University's School of Public Health compared two numbers for each state: the black-white ratio in the rate of fatal police shootings from 2013 to mid-2017, and something the authors termed a "racism index." | For the…

WATCH: Mississippi Police Chief Gets Caught Smoking Weed.
Phillip Smith, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-10
And now he's the ex-chief. | The man who described himself on video as "the only chief of police in Lumberton that likes to smoke weed" is now out of a job after that video, which indeed shows him admittedly smoking marijuana, was shown on a local television station. Lumberton, Mississippi, Police Chief Shane Flynt had been suspended after the video emerged, and on Tuesday, the Lumberton Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to accept his resignation. Mayor Quincy Rogers wanted Flynt fired, but the board instead accepted his resignation, with Alderwoman Audrey Davis saying the board wanted to give Flynt a chance at another opportunity. It's unclear when the video was recorded, although Christmas music can at times be heard in the background, and the red-eyed police chief makes a reference to a red-nosed reindeer. Religious Freedom Is a Progressive Value and a Cornerstone of Our Democracy.
Frederick Clarkson, Political Research Associates | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-10
The Christian Right has been appropriating religious freedom to advance its agenda–frequently saying what religious freedom is not, but not much about what it is. | (Editor's note: The following article is adapted from the author's speech at the New York Society for Ethical Culture and first appeared at PoliticalResearch. org)Religious freedom is a central issue of our time. It has figured prominently in recent decisions of the U. S. Supreme Court. It was a major theme of the presidential election of 2016. And it has been a major theme of the Christian Right in both its evangelical protestant and Catholic expressions, as part of an effort to enact their religious and political agenda. In June, the Supreme Court will announce its decision in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, where it will be decided whether businesses can discriminate. . .

When a Trillion Dollars' Worth of Bombs Is Not Enough.
Staff | Truthdig: Expert Reporting, Current News, Provocative Columnists | 2018-03-10
For the New York Times, the US is always lagging behind the Russian menace. Previously, the Times has told us how America was losing the "scramble for the Arctic" ( 8/30/15) and falling behind in election-meddling ( 3/4/18). Now it's in the realms of cyber and nuclear war that the Times sees dangerous gaps. | In "A Russian Threat on Two Fronts Meets an American Strategic Void" ( 3/5/18), reporters David Sanger and William Broad passed along the worries of Washington–as expressed by a few military higher-ups, some guy from the arms industry mouthpiece known as the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and a disembodied "The United States"–that Trump didn't have a coherent strategy for dealing with cyber and nuclear threats from Russia. 'Queer Eye' and the Myth of the Self-Made Man.
Stefanie Duguay, The Conversation | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-10
The new Queer Eye's focus on consumerism threatens its lofty ideals. | Netflix's revamp of the classic makeover show Queer Eye, originally called Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, has received rave reviews. In this eight-episode season, the "Fab Five" — gay men who are experts in grooming, fashion, culture, design and cooking — pile into a new pick-up truck to scour the Atlanta area for lonely and messy men. The show adapts to current social realities. Bravo's classic Queer Eye for The Straight Guy aired in 2003 and was considered daring simply by displaying gay and heterosexual men interacting on television. This Fab Five address a wider range of issues including racism and religious differences. Recent reviewers say the show does a good job of teaching heterosexual men how to display emotions and develop self-acceptance. By so doing, Queer Eye becomes. . .

Donald Trump's Relentless Fixer: The Many Mysterious Doings of Michael Cohen.

A group of senior girls, spurred to action by the horrors of the Parkland massacre and emboldened by watching videos of its protesting students, organized a walkout of their own. Ivanka Trump Backed Flynn and Manafort. She Discussed Firing Comey. How Has She Evaded Mueller's Investigation?
Hannah Seligson | The Intercept | 2018-03-10
Ivanka Trump is the ghost of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation: She is connected, either directly or tangentially, to events at the heart of the probe, yet all but invisible to the public. | But as Mueller's investigation broadens, the so-called first daughter is becoming a long overdue part of the bigger story of alleged corruption at the Trump Organization. Last week, we learned that the FBI is looking into the financing and negotiations surrounding her involvement with Trump International Hotel and Tower in Vancouver, which is home to an Ivanka Trump-branded spa. That inquiry may be unrelated to the Russia probe, but it should draw scrutiny to Ivanka's business dealings and how they relate to her father's political rise. | The mainstream press frequently describes Ivanka — who recently denied any collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and the…

None of those things. . .

A recent study in Cerebral Cortex found that LSD changed the perception of music by altering the neural response in certain key brain regions, including those that govern. .

A recent study in Cerebral Cortex found that LSD changed the perception of music by altering the neural response in certain key brain regions, including those that govern. . .

The front-page subhead warned, "Russia has ramped up its arsenal, US has done…

Meet the Democratic 'Dirty Dozen' Working to Gut Financial Reforms.
Marshall Auerback, AlterNet | AlterNet.org | 2018-03-10
This act of regulatory vandalism highlights everything that is corrupt about our political system. | We have grown to expect no less from the GOP, whose sole raison d'etre these days seems to be filling the trough from which America's fat cats can perpetually gorge themselves. What is truly disturbing, however, is that the Republican effort is being given bipartisan cover by more than a dozen Democratic senators: Doug Jones (Ala. ), Joe Donnelly (Ind. ), Heidi Heitkamp (N. D. ), Jon Tester (Mont. ), Mark Warner and Tim Kaine (both from Va. ), Claire McCaskill (Mo. ), Joe Manchin (W. Va. ), Gary Peters (Mich. ), Michael Bennet (Colo. ), Chris Coons (Del. ), and Tom Carper of Delaware. Why Trump is so worried about Stormy Daniels remains unclear. But if Michael Cohen is involved, it must be serious. | If there is one person lurking around the shadows of every Trump scandal, it would be his personal lawyer Michael Cohen, known as the Tom Hagen of the Trump family, only with much less class and dignity than the original consigliere of "Godfather" fame. Back in 2011 ABC News described him as "the man behind Donald Trump's possible 2012 presidential campaign," and asked him about the Hagen reference. He replied: [I]f somebody does something Mr. Trump doesn't like, I do everything in my power to resolve it to Mr. Trump's benefit. How Effective are International Human Rights Treaties?
Joan Roelofs | counterpunch.org | 2018-03-09
Comprehensive international human rights law began with the creation of the UN. "Before the end of World War II, how a state treated its own inhabitants was nobody else's business" (Louis Henkin). Protecting and advancing human rights was one goal of the UN, as many were horrified at the atrocities that led up to and continued throughout World War II. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by all members of the UN General Assembly in 1948 is not binding, yet it was a prelude to legally binding treaties (often called conventions or covenants). The US Constitution provides that treaties become "the law of the land."
