On the campaign trail in January of 2016, Hillary Clinton told Iowa voters that Bernie Sanders' single payer health care proposal was an idea whose time would never come. "People who have health emergencies can't wait for us to have a theoretical debate about some better idea that will never, ever come to pass," said the presumed shoo-in for president. Two years later, one-third of Democrats in the Senate have endorsed Sanders' Medicare for All Act and half the Democrats in the U.S. House have signed on to Rep. John Conyers' Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, HR 676. Polls show 75 percent of Democrats favor "expanding Medicare to provide health insurance to every American," and 31 percent of the public at-large wants health care to be the first problem the Democrats tackled if they win…

How Effective are International Human Rights Treaties?
Joan Roelofs | counterpunch.org | 2018-03-09
Comprehensive international human rights law began with the creation of the UN. "Before the end of World War II, how a state treated its own inhabitants was nobody else's business" (Louis Henkin). Protecting and advancing human rights was one goal of the UN, as many were horrified at the atrocities that led up to and continued throughout World War II. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by all members of the UN General Assembly in 1948 is not binding, yet it was a prelude to legally binding treaties (often called conventions or covenants). The US Constitution provides that treaties become "the law of the land."

I was still in the womb, as an earlier celebrity president, also obsessed with television, sat down to view a highly touted TV movie, " The Day After." Ronald Reagan, like Donald Trump, was a star–a famous actor–and also a well-known Republican foreign policy hawk with an aggressive nuclear weapons posture. The movie was a dystopian portrayal of the aftermath of a Soviet nuclear attack in the small college town of Lawrence, Kan., where I now live. | Reagan (like Trump) wasn't keen on briefing books or detailed memos. Arnold Isaacs | MintPress News | 2018-03-09
When you see an immigrant or a foreign visitor, especially from a Muslim country, should your first thought be that you might be looking at a possible terrorist? | Clearly, that's how the Trump administration wants Americans to react. It was the message in the president's first address to Congress a year ago, when he declared that "the vast majority of individuals convicted of terrorism and terrorism-related offenses since 9/11 came here from outside of our country." At that time, he urged that the U.S. immigration system be reshaped because "we cannot allow a beachhead of terrorism to form inside America." | There's a misleading omission in Trump's formulation, though: homegrown fanatics have killed many more Americans on U.S. soil than foreign-born terrorists have. | The disparity grows much wider if you include mass killings carried…

Even before Hurricane Maria struck the island nearly six months ago, the majority of Puerto Rico's residents lived with water that violated health standards set by the U.S. law. Since the storm, residents say the situation has only gotten worse. Among the sources of potential water contamination are mountains of coal ash generated by a coal-fired power plant owned by a private company called AES. For years, residents have demanded the company stop dumping toxic coal ash into their community, saying the waste is poisonous to their health and the environment.
